사회의 유일한 구성요소로서의 소통: 사건과 형식으로서의 사회 (Kommunikation as the Only Component of the Society: the Society as Event and Form)

초록

루만에게 있어 사회는 소통의 생성으로 창발했고, 소통으로 유지·분화되며 존속한다. 본 논문은 첫째, 소통 개념이 사회를 정의하는 데 유일한 기준이라는 루만의 주장을 소개하고, 둘째, 그러한 정의가 사회학의 근본 난제들을 해결하는 데 도움이 될 수 있다는 점을 밝힌다. 루만의 소통 ʻ개념ʼ은 (생각들이 전제된 조건에서) 전달행동과 이해가 동시에 발생하여 전달된 것을 남기는 것이다. 전달행동/이해의 동시 발생은 사건이며, 전달된 것은 형식이다. 형식은 후속 사건에 대해 구조로서 작용한다. 사건과 형식은 이 원리에 따라 시간 축 위에서 후속 사건과 후속 형식으로 대체되어 나간다. 이러한 사건-형식의 반복은 의미를 처리하는 소통과 의미를 축적하는 ʻ의미론ʼ을 형성시킨다. 소통과 의미론은 각각 사회와 문화 개념에 대한 루만의 대안이다. 사회와 문화는 각각 사건과 형식으로서 개념적으로 분리되어 하나의 분석 틀에 통합된다. 이 원리에 따라 사회의 과정성과 안정성, 변화와 질서, 사회동학과 사회정학 역시 개념적으로 분리되어 통합된다. 이 구도는 그밖에도 구조사회학과 행위사회학을 통합하고, 실재론과 관념론을 동시에 극복한다. 행위자(전달)와 관찰자(이해)가 관계를 맺는 소통에 주목하는 이 구도는 또한 행위사회학과 지식사회학을 통합하는 프레임으로 사용될 수 있다. 이 개념 도식은 사회의 창발과 변천을 주된 분화(사건) 원칙과 의미론(형식)의 관점에 따라 일관되게 설명한다.

영어초록

Luhmann traces back the emergence of the society to the generation of communication. The society reproduces itself on the basis of communication, maintaining and differentiating itself. This paper introduces the Luhmann’s arguments in that the concept of Kommunikation is the only criterium in the definition of the society, and argues that such a definition can be helpful to solve several dilemmas of sociological theory. According to Luhmann’s conception, communication occurs (under the presupposition of thoughts) on the simultaneous moment of utterance/understanding, leaving something said behind. The occurrence of utterance/understanding is an event, while ‘something said’ is a form. Form functions as a structure which encourages the next event to occur. In this principle, the event and form are replaced on the time axis with next event and form. In the course of such iterations, Kommunikation processes meaning on the one, and semantics condenses meaning on the other side. The both are Luhmann’s alternatives for society and culture, the central figures of mainstream-sociology. Society and culture are conceptually separated and integrated in a comprehensive frame. According to this principle, the society’s dynamics and stability are also divided and integrated in a frame. The same principle can be applied to society’s changes and order, social dynamics and statics. Besides, this perspective can also integrate the sociology of structure and of action, and overcomes the realism and idealism on the same time. Focusing on Kommunikation relating actors(saying) and observers(hearing) to each other, we can systematically observe the both, and integrate the sociology of actions and of experiences. This conceptual schema consistently explains the emergence and changes of the society, based on the primary differentiation(event) principle and semantics(form).
