초록

이 글은 Nayoung Aimee Kwon(권나영)의 Intimate Empire: Collaborati on & Colonial Modernity in Korea & Japan (친밀한 제국: 한국과 일본에서 협력과 식민지 근대성)을 일제말기 한국문학 연구의 흐름 속에 위치시키며 여기서 제기하는 ‘친밀성’이라는 시각이 어떠한 함의와 한계가 있는지를 지적한다. 이 저서는 기존 연구들이 배후의 폭력을 부각시키면서 “친밀하게 공유”된 역사를 부인하려 하거나, 배후의 폭력 옆에 친밀한 관계를 동등하게 배치하는 것과는 달리, 이 둘이 동시에 존재하는 것이며 친밀성의 배면에 폭력이 있었고, 오히려 그 친밀성을 탐색함으로서 식민지(인)과 본국(인) 사이의 복합적이고 중층적이고 분열적이고도 모순적인 관계를 살피고 그 역사적 국면들을 재조명한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
이렇게 이 책은 본국(인)과 식민지(인) 사이의 ‘트랜스콜로니얼’한 조우에서 ‘친밀성’이라는 것이 얼마나 여러 겹의 강압과 회유 사이에서 갈등과 흔들림 속의 복잡한 표정인지를 잘 드러내준다. 어린 조선 유학생의 일본인에 대한 사랑과 절망(「愛か」), 아쿠다카와상 수상 후보를 둘러싼 일본 본국인들의 동정적 태도와 이에 대한 김사량의 심정과 그의 소설 속 인물들의 복잡한 심리, 식민지 조선인들의 일본어 글쓰기라는 것 자체에 내재한 양가성, 좌담회라는 형식 속에 내재한 폭력성과 결국 내선일체를 홍보하기 위한 들러리로 사용될 뿐인 식민지 조선인들의 억지 웃음들 등에 내재한 ‘정동’(情動 affect)들을 끈질기게 추적함을 통해, 식민지(인)과 본국(인) 사이의 ‘협력’의 표면에 보이는 ‘친밀성’과 그 배면에 있는 제국의 강압성이 어떻게 복잡하게 얽혀져있는지를 잘 보여주고 있다. 그러나 결국 이러한 정동을 식민지-제국이라는 단선적인 관계로 환원시켜 설명하고 있다는 문제점이 있다.
이 책은 ‘친밀한 제국’인 미국에서 수행된 연구라는 점에서 한일의 국민국가적 경계를 벗어난 위치에서 일제말기 ‘포스트콜러니얼적 조우’를 조망할 수 있었지만, 다른 한편으로는 이론의 과잉을 보이며 한국문학 연구 성과들과 식민지 조선의 텍스트를 ‘서구’ 보편에 대해 문제제기하는 방식으로만 사용하는 문제점을 보인다. 이는 저자가 비판하려 한, 일본 본국과 식민지 조선 사이의 불균등한 권력관계를 미국 학계와 한국의 학계라는 관계 속에서 반복하는 측면이 있다. 물론 한국의 ‘국어국문학’과 미국의 한국학 내의 한국문학 연구는 단순히 제국 본국과 식민지의 관계로 환원할 수 없는 중층적인 관계이며, 때로는 한국의 ‘국어국문학’이 제국 본국의 위치를 자임하기도 하는 복잡한 양상을 띠고 있다. 결국 한국과 외국에서의 한국문학 연구가 ‘협력’하기 위해서는 서로의 특권을 내려놓고 서로를 환대하는 것이 필요하다.

영어초록

Nayoung Aimee Kwon's Intimate Empire: Collaboration and Colonial Modernity in Korea and Japan analyzes postcolonial encounter between Korea and Japan with the perspective of "intimacy." This essay will suggest the implication and limitation of Kwon's approach by reviewing her work in the context of the studies of Korean literature in the late Japanese empire period. Kwon's study is distinguished from the previous studies, which deny "intimately shared" history between Japan and Korea by underlying only the repressive reality of the Japanese Empire, or which place the repressive reality and the intimate relationship in parallel. By analyzing the intimacy between Korea(n) and Japan(ese), Kwon successfully explores complex, ambivalent, and contradictory relationship between them, and sheds anew light on the historical aspects. The book demonstrates well that the "intimacy" in the context of "trans-colonial" encounter between Japan(ese) and Korea(n) has the complexity of conflicts and confusion under the multi-layered repression and appeasement.
By tracing "affect" in various examples, including young Korean students' affection towards Japanese and their despair (chapter 1), Japanese critics' ambivalent attitude towards Kim Sa-ryang, Akutakawa Prize’s nominee, and Kim Sa-ryang’s reaction to the Japanese critics (chapter 3), the complicated characters in Kim Sa-ryang's novel (chapter 4), the ambivalent meaning of colonial Koreans' writing in Japanese (chapter 5), the repression inherent in the format of round table discussion and the enforced laughs of colonial Koreans, which were used ultimately to promote propagate the idea of 內鮮一體 (Japan-Korea as one) (chapter 7), the study illustrates well how the ‘intimacy’ on the surface is complicatedly related to underlying repression of the empire. However, the analysis has its limits in that all the explanations are reduced to the linear relationship between colonial Korea and the empire.
Given that the research was conducted in the ‘intimate empire,’ the United States, this study allows us to view the postcolonial encounter between Korea and Japan, from the perspective, which is free from the national boundaries; but, on the other hand, the study includes the excess of theories, and uses the studies of Korean literature and texts of the colonial Korea only for the purpose of disputing the concept of "western universality." This, in a sense, seems to repeat the unequal power relation between colonial Korea and Japan, which the author tried to criticize, in the context of the unequal power relation between the Korean academia and the US academia. Admittedly, the relation between Korea's Korean literature studies and studies in the frame of Korean studies in the United States is more complex, and cannot be reduced to the relation between colonies and empires. Sometimes even the Korea's Korean literature claim its position as the 'center' or the 'empire.' In order to ‘collaborate’ between Korean studies in Korea and the U.S. ‘we’ have to welcome others with hospitality and try to self-reflect ourselves by the otherness.
