초록

모든 공간은 일종의 표상이다. 공간의 의미는 사람들의 공통된 인식의 결과로, 사회적 합의와 학습을 통해 구성된다. 사회학은 매우 오래전부터 공간을 사회적 결과물로 인식해왔다. 소설에서 공간은 작가의 선택으로 제한되는 수행적 구성 요소이다.
특히 오정희 소설에서 공간은 단순한 배경 이상의 역할을 한다. 「중국인거리」, 「유년의 뜰」, 「파로호」처럼 제목에 아예 공간적 상징이 들어간 작품도 많지만 서브텍스트를 담은 제유이자 상징일 때가 많다.
오정희의 소설에서 집은 소설 전체의 아우라와 주제를 함축한다. 특히 「옛우물」은 여성의 내면을 공간적 은유와 제유로 배치하고 명명함으로써 여성적 욕망의 입체적 조감도를 제시하고 있다.
「옛우물」은 오정희 소설 많은 연구와 논의가 집중되어 온 작품이기도 하다. 안타까운 것은 그 연구가 대개 ‘여성’과 ‘모성’과 같은 특정 언어에 집중됨으로써 「옛우물」이 지닌 다층적 해석의 가능성과 미학적 해석의 지평이 축소된 바가 없지 않다는 사실이다.
「옛우물」은 플롯 구성의 시간성에 있어서도 무척 의미 있는 소설이지만 욕망을 구체적 장소로 명명하고 배치했다는 점에서 건축학적 개성을 가진 작품이기도 하다. ‘고층아파트’, ‘예성아파트’, ‘연당집’은 각각 인물을 구성하는 자아의 다양한 층위를 제유한다.
법과 질서를 체질화한 현실적 자아, 과거와 현재를 반추하는 실존적인 자아, 리비도와 욕망에 흔들리며 통제되지 못하는 본능적 자아가 이 공간적 명명 안에 녹아 있다. 이는 프로이트가 아주 오래전 이야기한 초자아-자아-이드의 공간적 스펙터클화이기도 하다. 주체, 자아, 욕망의 스펙트럼을 공간적 구조물을 통해 재현해 낸 것이다.
「옛우물」은 직접적인 어투로 여성의 현실이나 그것을 만들어 낸 환경과 역사, 질서에 대해 비판하지 않는다. 오히려 할머니, 어머니, 자신으로 이어지는 평범한 일상 속에 그것이 어떻게 유전되고 변형되어 침윤했는지를 보여줌으로써 우리 스스로도 느끼지 못했던 현실의 이데올로기성을 각성케 한다.
이는 한 여성을 억압하는 가부장제의 흔적이기도 하지만 삶의 관성을 내재화한, 대개의 인간 존재에 대한 보편적 이야기이기도 하다. 그런 점에서 「옛우물」은 소설의 아주 오래된 주제라고 할 수 있을 근원적 자아와 현실적 주체 사이의 불일치와 갈등이라는 소재를 매우 수준 높은 형상화 방식을 통해 새롭게 하고, 전경화한 작품이라는 것을 다시 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

Every space is a kind of representation. The meaning of space is composed through social agreement and learning of people’s common perception. Sociology has perceived space as a social outcome for a very long time. At the moment, when a space is put in a place, it is not an accidental phenomenon, but reveals a special meaning after going through institution, custom, and discourse. A space in a novel is not only an object of imitation, but also a performative element designated by the author’s selection. The spaces in Oh Jeong-Hee’s novels work as something more than simple background. Just like 「The Chinese Street」, 「The Garden of Childhood」, and 「Paro Lake」, many of her works have titles that include the spatial symbol. However, a lot of them are synecdoche and symbols containing a subtext in the space between lines of works.
In Oh Jeong-Hee’s novels, a house provides a clear image that implies the subject contained in the whole novel and an aura beyond the simple spatial background. Especially, her work 「The Old Well」, which cubically visualizes feminine desire by arranging and calling women’s inner side into a concrete shape through spatial metaphor and synecdoche. Oh Jeong-Hee’s 「The Old Well」 is an absolute masterpiece that has been researched and discussed many times. Unfortunately, most of those researches focused on areas like ‘woman’ and ‘motherhood’, thereby reducing the prospect of aesthetic interpretation and the possibility of multilayered interpretation of 「The Old Well」.
Centered around the lifetime ruminations through a day in the life of a 45-year-old middle-aged woman, 「The Old Well」 is a meaningful novel for the temporality of plot composition. Also, the calling and arranging desire as a concrete place in a space gives this work an architectural strength. Its ‘high-rise apartment building’, ‘Yeseong Apartment’, and ‘house of Yeondang’ represent various layers of ego through synecdoche, composing each manifest being of a woman. The space of a realistic ego naturally obeying the law and order, an existential ego that examines and ruminates the past and the present, and an instinctive ego that is swayed by libido and desire with no control, is melted in a place that is spatially called the spectacled space of the internal layer of ego built up with superego-ego-id proposed by Freud a long time ago. The subject, ego, and internal spectrum have been represented through spatial structure.
「The Old Well」 does not directly criticize the reality of women, or its environment, history, and order. By showing how it has been inherited, transformed, and infiltrates ordinary daily life continued from grandmother and mother to herself, it enables us to realize the ideological feature of reality that has not been felt before. This is not only a trace of patriarchy suppressing a woman, but also a story about most human beings internalizing the inertia of life, which can be described in one word: disillusionment’. In this aspect, 「The Old Well」 has renewed and foregrounded its material like discordance and conflict, between original ego and the realistic subject that used to be an old theme of novels, through the sophisticated representation method.
