양주 靑蓮寺의 豫修齋와 조선후기 명부전 도상 (Yesu-jae ritual of Cheongryeonsa Temple in Yangju and Buddhist images of the late Joseon Dynasty enshrined in the Myungbu-jeon Hall)

초록

生前預修齋는 산 자와 죽은 자를 위한 의례가 함축된 형태로 산 자의 預修信仰과 죽은 자의 薦度信仰이 결합된 것이다. 양주 청련사는 생전예수재 의식을 승려들의 교육을 통해 현재까지도 전승해 오고 있는 사찰이다. 본 논문은 무형문화로서 예수재 의식을 현재까지 계승해 오고 있는 청련사의 예수재 設行 전통을 예수재와 깊은 연관이 있는 冥府殿 존상을 중심으로 고찰한 것이다.
양주 청련사에 현존하는 예수재와 관련된 유물로는 17세기에 조성된 석조지장보살상, 1765년 약사전에서 간행된 『지장경언해』, 1880년에 조성된 것으로 추정되는 지장시왕도 등이 있다. 청련사 명부전의 지장보살상이 조성된 17세기는 천도재 및 예수재와 관련된 지장삼존상·시왕상·명부 권속 등이 봉안된 명부전의 건립과 존상의 조성이 활발하던 시대였다. 즉 지옥의 중생 구제와 관련된 지장신앙과 염라대왕을 비롯한 十王이 관련된 명부신앙에 관한 미술이 유행했던 것이다.
양주 청련사에서 설행된 예수재와 관련해서 가장 주목할만한 자료는 예수재 소의경전 가운데 하나인 1765년에 간행된 『지장경언해』이다. 이 경전 간행에도 참여한 涵月堂 海源(1691~1770)은 예수재와 관련된 「預修齋䟽」를 남기고 있다. 또한 지장경 언해본 간행에 조선 후기 새로운 시주층이었던 居士들이 당대 고승들과 함께 동참하고 있고, 18세기 청련사의 예수재 설행에도 참여했을 것으로 여겨져 주목된다.

영어초록

The Saengjeon-Yesu-jae(生前預修齋) is a Buddhist ritual for both the living and the dead. It was established by combining two rituals, the Yesu-jae(預修齋) for the living and the Cheondo-jae(薦度齋) for the deceased. Cheongryeonsa Temple in Yangju is a temple that has been continuing the Saengjeon-Yesu-jae ritual to the present day through the education of the buddhist monks. In this study, the tradition of practicing Yesu-jae ritual in Cheongryeonsa Temple as an intangible culture was examined by focusing on the Buddhist Images, enshrined in Myungbu-jeon Hall, closely related to Yesu-jae.
Cheongryeonsa Temple has relics related to Yesu-jae such as Stone Statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva believed to be made in the 17th century, buddhist sutra Jijangbosal Bonwongyeong Eonhae(Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra annotated in Hangul) printed at the Yaksa-jeon Hall of this temple in 1765, and Painting of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Ten Underworld Kings believed to be painted in 1880.
The 17th century, when the Stone Statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva of Cheongryeonsa Temple was made, was an era of active construction of Myungbujeon Hall and the production of Buddhist statues related to Yesu-jae, such as Statues of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad [Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, Domyung, and Mudokgwi] and Ten Underworld Kings. The art about the faith in Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva who saves the spirits of the deceased from hell and art related to the faith in Ten Underworld Kings were popular in this period.
The most notable relics related to the Yesu-jae ritual performed in Cheongryeonsa Temple is Jijangbosal Bonwongyeong Eonhae. The monk Haewon (海源; 1691~1770) who participated in the publication of this sutra also wrote Yesu-jae-so(預修齋䟽) related to Yesu-jae. In addition, the Geosa(居士) who appeared on the records as new classes in the late Joseon Dynasty and played active roles in donating to the temple, were participating in the publication of the sutra together with famous monks. It is noteworthy that they are considered to have participated in the practicing Yesu-jae ritual of Cheongryeonsa Temple in the 18th century.
