김성일의 예사상과 일본인식 (Kim Seongil’s Ideology of Rite and Recognition of Japan)

초록

임진왜란 직전에 일본에 파견되었던 1590년의 통신사는 사행 중에 있었던 온갖 일들과 귀국 후 일본의 침략가능성에 대한 삼사의 다른 보고로 인해 그 후 전쟁책임론으로 연결되면서 논쟁거리가 되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 이 문제에 대해 종래의 당쟁론적 시각에서 벗어나 사상적인 차원에서 접근해 보았다. 즉 당쟁을 바탕으로 한 음모론적 시각이 아니라 그들 자신의 가치관과 일본인식에 입각해 제시한 판단과 방책으로 이해하자는 것이다. 보다 근본적으로 세계관과 철학, 그리고 그것에 바탕을 둔 대외인식과 일본관의 상위에서 나온 것이라고 보았다.
김성일은 퇴계학맥의 적통을 이은 수제자로서 성리학에서는 스승의 학설을 계승했으나 예학에 있어서는 독자적 경지를 개척하였다. 김성일의 일본인식의 특징은 화이관과 예론에 철저하다는 점이다. 그는 이러한 관념을 국제사회에 적용해 일관된 논리체계 속에서 이해하였다. 일본사행은 그것을 적용하고 실천할 수 있는 좋은 기회이기도 하였다. 사행에서 그는 실천적 예학자로서의 면모를 유감없이 과시하였다.
그는 조선초기 이래의 전통적인 일본이적관의 바탕 위에 일본을 야만국으로 무시하였고, 일본사회의 변화상에 대해 외면하며 문물에 대해서도 관심을 두지 않았다. 사행하면서 그들의 무례한 행태와 이질적인 문화, 풍속을 보고는 일본에 대한 이적관과 멸시관이 더 심화되었다. 철저하게 문화적 우월감 속에서 일본을 관찰했는데 일본의 군사적 위세나 경제적 번영을 도외시하였다. 그는 일본이 조선을 쉽게 침략할 수 있는 역량을 갖추었다고 보지 않았으며, 그러한 생각은 귀국보고에도 반영되었다.
김성일은 백년만의 사행이기 때문에 올바른 전례를 확립해야 한다는 사명감에 충실하였다. 그래서 기존의 잘못된 관행이나, 명분에 어긋나는 의례에 대해서는 갈등을 무릅써서라도 고치고자 하였다. 이로 인해 일본측은 물론 황윤길, 허성과도 치열하게 논쟁하면 싸웠다.
한편 김성일은 일본정세를 정탐한다는 사명에는 그다지 성공적이지 못하였다. 이에 비해 귀국보고에서 침략가능성을 인정한 황윤길과 허성은 현실적 입장에서 일본과의 관계 개선을 중시하였다. 황윤길은 각종 사안에서 자신의 의견을 별로 내세운 바 없었다. 그가 율곡의 영향권에 있었던 만큼 허성보다는 상대적으로 온건하였고, 독자적인 이론이 없었기 때문에 논쟁에서 김성일과 치열하게 다투지 않았던 것으로 여겨진다. 오히려 허성이 김성일과 강하게 논쟁을 벌였다. 본 논문에서는 그 중에서도 체모론과 의례론에 관해 집중적으로 살펴보았다.
김성일은 제반 상황과 사안을 천리, 의리, 명분 등의 보편적 이념과 예법으로 규제할 수 있다고 보았다. 보편적인 문화의 우열에 입각해 일본사회의 현실과 역사성, 독자성을 간과한 측면이 있다. 이념이 현실을 압도했다고도 할 수 있다. 사건마다 두 사람이 대립했던 배경에는 이와 같은 사상과 인식론의 근본적 차이가 깔려있었다고 판단된다.

영어초록

The Tongsinsa in 1590, who was dispatched to Japan immediately before the Japanese invasion, has been controversial since it was linked to the war responsibility argument because of all the things that were in the process of diplomatic trip in Japan and different reports of the invasion by Japan.
In this paper, we tried to approach this problem from on idelogical perspective, getting out of controversial perspective. In other words, it is not the conspiracy theories based on the conflict but the judgments and measures based on their own values and Japanese perceptions. More fundamentally, from the viewpoint of worldview and philosophy, and the difference on external perception and recognition of Japan.
Kim Seongil inherited the teachings of the master in Confucianism as the supreme master of the Toegye school, but he pioneered his own unique position in the field of ritual study. Kim Seongil's recognition of Japan is characterized by thoroughness of confucian world idea and ritual theory. He applied this idea to the international community and understood it in a consistent logic system. Diplomatic trip to Japan was also a good opportunity to apply and practice it. In the trip he showed off his appearance as a practical ritual scholar.
He ignored Japan as a barbarian nation on the basis of the traditional recognition of Japan since the early Joseon dynasties, ignored the changes of Japanese society, and did not pay attention to the culture of Japan. When he saw their disrespectful behaviors, heterogeneous cultures, and customs, his notion of contempt was deepened. He thoroughly observed Japan in a cultural superiority, but ignored Japan's military power and economic prosperity. He did not think that Japan had the capacity to easily invade Joseon, and such thoughts were reflected in his reports.
Kim Seongil was faithful to his sense of duty to establish the right ceremony. So, he tried to fix the conflicts about the existing erroneous practices and rituals that are against the justification. As a result, he fought fiercely with the Japanese side, Hwang Yungil, and Huh Sung also when they argued.
On the other hand, Kim Seongil was not very successful in his mission to spy on the Japanese situation. In comparison, Hwang Yungil and Huh Sung, who recognized the possibility of invasion in their home country, emphasized improvement of relations with Japan from a realistic point of view. They had a strong argument with Kim Seongil. In this paper, I have focused on the theory of national prestige and the theory of ritual.
Kim Seongil thought that it has been able to regulate all situations and issues in terms of universal ideology and methods such as heavenly, righteous, and justified. But for him there are aspects overlooking the reality, history, and originality of Japanese society based on the superiority of universal culture. It can be said that ideology overwhelmed reality. I think that there is a fundamental difference between the idea and the epistemology in the background that the two people confront each other.
