서정주 「국화 옆에서」의 창작 배경에 대한 고찰 ―관련 산문을 중심으로 (A Study on the Creative Background of Seo Jeong-ju's 「Beside the Chrysanthemum」 -Focusing on related Prose)

초록

이 논문은 서정주의 대표시 「국화 옆에서」의 관련 산문에 대한 연구이다. 시인이 남긴 산문은 네 편이지만 대부분의 연구자가 이 자료를 활용하지 않고 있다. 시인이 창작 과정과 배경을 소상히 밝혀 놓았기 때문에 시 해독 과정에 이를 활용하면 새로운 관점과 풍부한 맥락을 얻을 수 있다. 이 논문은 관련 산문 전체를 검토하여 시 작품과 연관시켜 해독한 최초의 논문이라는 데 의의가 있다.
시인의 술회에 따르면 이 시는 3연부터 만들고 1연과 2연, 4연은 불면의 밤을 실제로 경험한 자신의 사례를 들어 완성했다고 한다. 3연은 거울 앞에 돌아 온 여인의 이미지인데 이는 여러 해 동안 시인의 내면에서 표현되지 못한 채 맴돌고 있다가 마당의 국화꽃을 보면서 비로소 만들어지게 된다. 여기에 소쩍새와 천둥소리의 이미지가 결합하여 고난 뒤에 성취가 이루어진다는 삶의 법칙을 함축하고 있다.
국화의 냄새가 민족의 기원을 생각하게 한다는 산문도 있다. 국화 향과 쑥 향이 비슷하기 때문이다. 쑥은 민족 기원 서사에 등장하는 중요한 화소이며 그것의 중요한 기능은 시련과 인내이다. 이 시련과 인내의 기능이 시 「국화 옆에서」에 고스란히 전이된다.
소년시절의 다양한 경험과 상상세계로 이끌어가는 주요한 촉매도 국화이다. ‘질마재-줄포 바다호수길’의 인문학 걷기 체험을 통해 예술가의 본질이 ‘허기(배고픔)’에 있음을 자각하고 이것이 ‘무無가 곧 창생’이라는 ‘불이不二’의 사유와 연관됨으로써 ‘고난과 시련이 곧 개화開花’라는 심미적 사유의 기초를 제공한다. 이런 체험과 상상력이 자라서 무서리 속에서 피는 국화꽃이 되고 젊은 날의 방황을 끝내고 돌아와서 거울 앞에 선 누님이 된다.
또한 보통학교의 여선생님과 바느질하는 여인도 국화와 연관된 주요 인물들이다. 이들 역시 「국화 옆에서」에 등장하는 누님의 이미지 형성에 어느 정도 영향을 미쳤다고 본고는 바라본다.

영어초록

This study is a study on the related prose of Seo Jeong-ju's representative poem 「Beside the chrysanthemum」. There are four prose left by the poet, but most researchers do not use this data. In the related prose, the poet has clearly revealed the creative process and background, so if you use it in the poem decoding process, you can get a new perspective and a new rich context. This study is meaningful in that it is the first study to interpret this poem by examining the entire related prose.
According to the poet's recollection, this poem was created from 3 episodes, and the 1st, 2nd, and 4th episodes were completed based on his case of actually experiencing sleepless nights. The third episode is an image of a woman who has returned in front of a mirror, which has been lingering inside the poet for many years without being expressed, and it is finally made while looking at the chrysanthemum flowers in the yard. It is a quiet woman in her 40s dressed in a white suit. Here, the sound of scops owl and thunder combine to imply the law of life that fulfillment is achieved after trials and hardships.
There is also prose that the smell of chrysanthemums reminds us of the origin of the nation. The home sick characteristic emphasizes that the poet's thoughts related to chrysanthemums are the sensory worlds related to the indigenous people’s pure bloodline by using the sensuous vocabulary of “really native” without mentioning the concept of nationalism.
Chrysanthemum also serves as a major catalyst to show the world of various experiences and imaginations in childhood. The poet realizes that the essence of the artist lies in ‘hunger (hunger)’ through the humanities walk experience of “Jilmajae-Julpo Sea Lake Road”. In addition, this awareness is linked to the thought of “not separated(不二)” that “nothing is created”, thus providing the basis for the aesthetic thought that “hardships and trials will soon bloom.” This experience and imagination grew, and chrysanthemum flowers bloomed in a first frost, and this experience and imagination ends up wandering on a young day and returns to become a sister standing in front of a mirror. In addition, a female teacher at a regular school and a woman sewing are also the main characters related to chrysanthemum. This study sees that these women also had some influence on the formation of the image of the sister who appeared in 「Beside the chrysanthemum」.
