시스네로스의 <영적 삶의 수련서>와 이냐시오의 <영신수련>: 이냐시오의 ‘선택’ 개념의 기원 탐구를 통한 문헌적 원천 문제에 대한 재고 (Cisneros’s Book of Exercises for the Spiritual Life and Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises: A Reconsideration of the Problem of Literary Sources by Investigating the Origin of Ignatius’s Concept)

초록

본고의 목적은 로욜라의 이냐시오의 <영신수련>과 그가 접촉하였을 몬세라트 분도회 개혁 수도원장 가르시아 데 시스네로스(García de Cisneros, 1455-1510)의 <영적 삶의 수련서> 사이의 관계를 재고하는 것이다. 두 저술 사이의 영향 관계에 관하여 여러 의견들이 제시되었지만 그에 대한 정확한 해명은 여전히 과제로 남아 있기 때문이다. 더욱이 이냐시오가 <영신수련의 간결한 개요>라는 요약본을 통해 시스네로스의 저술을 간접적으로 접촉하였다는 몇몇 현대 연구자들의 주장은 새로운 연구를 요청한다.
본고는 우선 현대의 연구들을 검토하여 논쟁점을 살펴보고 연구접근법을 재고하면서 더 적합한 비교방법론을 모색한다. 그리하여 ‘영향’ 개념에 관해 숙고하고, 『영신수련』과 『영적 삶의 수련서』가 전혀 다른 영성의 구조를 표현하고 있다는 사실과 이냐시오의 편집 작업의 창조적 성격을 충분히 고려하는 해석적 탐구가 필요함을 제안한다.
본고의 해석의 열쇠는 지금까지 연구자들에 의해 알려지지 않은 문헌적 사실의 발견과 그에 따른 질문이다. 『영적 삶의 수련서』 제4부의 내용은 『영신수련의 간결한 개요』에는 전적으로 누락되어 있는데 관상생활의 가치를 논하면서 수도승 신분의 ‘선택’을 권고하는 논의를 담고 있다. 본고는 그 점에 주목하여 어떻게 이냐시오가 『영신수련』의 영성구조의 핵심에 생활신분 ‘선택’을 놓을 구상을 할 수 있었는지 질문하며 탐구한다. 먼저 이냐시오가 만레사에서 자신의 고유한 성소를 발견하는 식별과정에 기여하였을 인간적 계기와 그의 『영신수련』 편집 의도에 대해 해석을 통한 이해를 시도한다. 그리고 『영적 삶의 수련서』 제4부의 어떤 텍스트가 이냐시오의 ‘선택’ 개념 형성에 필요한 영감과 자극과 도움을 주어 그에 관한 문헌적 원천이 될 수 있었는지 탐구한다.
결론으로는 이냐시오가 『영적 삶의 수련서』를 직접 접촉하였을 개연성이 높음을 다시 주장하고, 그 저술이 <영신수련>에 끼친 영향의 성격에 관해 생각해 본다.

영어초록

This article aims at rethinking anew the relationship between Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises and Garcia de Cisneros’s Book of Exercises for the Spiritual Life. Cisneros was a reform abbot in the benedictine monastery at Montserrat. Even to today, despite various views expressed, it still remains a task to obtain a precise understanding of the relationship of the influence between Cisneros’s book and Spiritual Exercises. Furthermore, a new study is called for since a hypothesis is proposed by some modern researchers that Ignatius had an indirect contact with Cisneros’s book through a summary version, which is called, Short Compendium of Spiritual Exercises.
Hence, this study surveys modern researches to bring out points of dispute and, reconsidering research approaches, it comes up with a more adequate comparative methodology. As a result, it proposes a need of refining the notion of influence and also the need of a hermeneutical investigation that should take into account of the creative character of Ignatius’s editorial work along with the very different structures of spirituality expressed in Cisneros’s book and the Spiritual Exercises.
The hermeneutical key of this study is a new question resulting from a discovery of a literary fact that has not been known so far. The 4th part of Cisneros’s book, wholly lacking in Short Compendium of Spiritual Exercises, includes a discussion on the value of the contemplative life and a subsequent recommendation of the ‘election’ of such a state of life. In view of this literary fact, this study asks how Ignatius could have come to the idea of putting ‘election’ of a state of life at the heart of the structure of the spirituality of the Spiritual Exercises. First, it attempts to attain an interpretative understanding of human factors that would have contributed to Ignatius’s discerning process of discovering his own vocation at Manresa, and also of his intention to edit the Spiritual Exercises. Then, it investigates how some texts from the 4th part of Cisneros’s book might have become a literary source providing Ignatius with inspiration, stimulation and help for his concept of ‘election.’In conclusion, maintaining that it is indeed very probable that Ignatius had a direct contact with Cisneros’s book, this study considers the character of the influence of Cisneros’s book on the Spiritual Exercises.
