초록

Since the Korea·Great Britain amity, Great britain's consistent support to Ching contributed greatly to maintain Korea as Ching's vassal state and Ching strengthened its hold on Korea after the Kapshin Chongbyon(The Coup d'Etat of 1884) in December 1884. In particular, in the process of solving Komundo island case, Ching received recognition again from the world powers including the Great Britain The Great Britain people rising to power judged that the independence of Korea from Ching would cause the same effect of putting Korea in the hands of Russia and by giving recognition to Ching's hold on Korea the Great Britain relation was not equal externally since the amity.
Their policy toward Korea was to have a satisfactory result indirectly through the policy toward Ching. Therefore, as Japan won the victory in the Ching-Japan War, the Great Britain changed their Eastern Asia Policy from Ching·support policy to Japan·support policy. Now that the incapability of Ching revealed, Great Britain's Eastern Asia Policy, which was to check Russia's advancement to south with the help of Ching, leaned toward Japan which seized power at that time. Japan's policy toward Korea increased full·scale after the Ching-Japan War.
In particular, the change of Russia's situation after Russia's occupation of Manchuria as a result of the Bover Rebellion in China in 1900, brought even more strong cooperation between the Great Britain and Japan. This gave birth to the Great Britain-Japan alliance in 1902 and finally Great Britain's traditional policy of "Honorable Isolation" come to an end. By forming the Great Britain-Japan alliance, the Great Britain could take advantage of Japan as a bulwark against Russia's advancement to the south and opened a road for Japan to invade Korea as compensation. For Japan, the conclusion of Great Britain-Japan amity was the great force against their war against Russia and Korea's fate was subject to the hands of Japan after they won the war.
After the opening of ports, following Ching's policy toward Korea to strengthen Ching's hold, Korea started amity with western powers but the situation of the Korean peninsula changed to a main stage for the contention for hegemonism and the changing alignment of the world powers.
