영적 어둠에 대한 마더 데레사의 체험과 이해 (Mother Teresa’s Experience and Understanding of Spiritual Darkness)

초록

자신의 삶을 온전히 가난한 이들을 위해 헌신한 마더 데레사의 내적 삶은 오히려 온통 ‘어둠’투성이었음이 최근 발간된 그녀의 편지들을 통해 알려졌다. 한마디로 그녀는 분명 ‘어둠의 성녀’였다. 그녀는하느님의 부재 체험이 가져온 온갖 영적 어둠을 겪으며 하느님 존재에 대한 의혹, 상실의 외로움, 열정의 무력감, 천국에 대한 공허감 등으로 괴로워했다. 우리는 그녀가 겪은 어둠 체험의 진정한 모습과 그영적 의미를 조명키 위해 마더 데레사의 서간 및 영적 조언자들의 증언에 나타난 영적 어둠 체험들과 그녀의 반응들을 분류하고 내적 의미를 살펴보았다.
그녀의 어둠 체험은 하느님께서 영혼의 영적 단련을 위해 내리시는가톨릭 전통의 영적 ‘어둔 밤’의 은총이었다. 그녀의 어둠 체험은 영혼의 정화의 단계에만 국한되지 않고, 그리스도의 고통과 일치를 위한사랑과 비움의 어둠, 가난한 이들의 치유를 위한 실천적 어둠이라는점에서 십자가 성 요한이 제시한 어둔 밤 체계와는 차이를 보인다. 그녀는 어둠 체험을 통하여 헌신을 향해 이끄는 단순한 믿음, 고통을 통한 그리스도와의 일치, 애덕실천을 통한 자아실현 그리고 완전한 기쁨의 영적 여정을 할 수 있었다. 이는 어둔 밤이 그녀에게 기능적으로작용한 모습이며 동시에 그녀가 그에 반응하고 수용해가는 모습이었다. 중요한 것은 그녀의 어둠 체험의 여정이 거창한 계시나 비전에 둘러싸인 신비 체험이 아니라, 가난한 이들과 동거하며 일상의 사소한일에서 끊임없이 그리스도의 고통에 동참하고 하느님의 사랑을 전파하는 실천적 여정이었다는 사실이다. 결론적으로 마더 데레사의 어둠체험은 하느님의 은총으로 내려진 영적 ‘어둔 밤’의 체험으로 하느님의 무한한 사랑의 심연으로 들어가는 희망의 통로였으며, 이 통로를통과하기 위해서는 거창한 계시나 비전이 필요한 것이 아니라 일상속에서 단순한 믿음을 지켜내고 작은 것에서부터 이웃에 대한 사랑을 끊임없이 실천하는 것이 필요하다는 것을 보여준다.

영어초록

We studied Mother Teresa’s experiences of spiritual darkness as represented in her private letters and writings, and memoirs of her spiritual advisers. In her own words, she was “a saint of darkness”. She dedicated her life to the poor and alienated in the slums of Calcutta; however, she revealed that she experienced lifelong spiritual darkness and suffering due to the feeling of God’s absence in her life. She felt that God had abandoned her, and she experienced the powerlessness of her apostolic zeal and a sense of existential emptiness, which eventually drove her to doubt God’s existence . In order to fully understand such a paradoxical life experience, we need to explore and classify her experiences of darkness and her reactions to them in the light of the theology of the “dark nights” of St John of the Cross.
Her experience of darkness was truly God’s grace; it was not only the purifying darkness of the soul that led her to share Christ’s Passion, but also the darkness of fulfillment that led her to dedicate her life to the service of the poor. In this respect, her experience of darkness is uniquely different from the teachings of John of the Cross. At the core of the spiritual journey of the innocent faith of Mother Teresa, there lay the experience of darkness, which enhanced her life of heroic service and her dedication, in union with Christ’s suffering. In order to reveal the functionality of this experience of darkness, our study focused on the experience and her diverse responses to this experience, as revealed in her writings. We emphasized the fact that her experience of darkness was not of a type of vision or revelation; rather, it was a daily journey of humble faith, of sharing God’s love of and service to the poor, and of joining with Christ’s Passion. In conclusion, Mother Teresa’s experience of darkness was a God-given grace that illuminated the dark night of the soul and a path of hope to the infinite depth of God’s mercy. We learned from her that in order to walk on this path, one does not necessarily require God’s grand revelation or visions, but only the simple faith by which one practices the Christian virtue of charity — even in very small daily encounters with neighbors.
