제2정화운동과 영축회 (Second Purification Movement of Korean Buddhism and Young-Chuk Group)

초록

1950년대 불교계에서는 불교정화운동이 치열하게 전개되었다. 이 운동은 불교계 내부에서의 식민지불교의 극복과 새로운 불교의 지향을 위한 고뇌였다. 그러나 이 운동은 비구승, 대처승 간의 치열한 대립을 가져 왔고 숱한 문제점을 잉태시켰다. 그럼에도 불구하고 1962년 4월 이른바 통합종단의 등장으로 그 운동은 일단락되고 조계종단으로 새 출발을 기하였다.
그러나 1962년 가을 경의 대처측의 퇴진, 종단내부의 명리추구, 1965년 경의 화동위원회의 등장, 신도 배척, 정화이념의 토착화 실패 등의 문제가 야기되었다. 이에 종단 일부에서는 대처측과의 갈등을 종식시킴으로서 이러한 종단의 문제를 마감시키고 도제양성, 역경, 포교 등에 전념하려는 일단의 세력이 있었다. 그에 반해 정화운동을 새롭게 하려는 중진, 소장파 승려들이 있었다. 본고찰은 바로 이러한 제2정화운동이라는 구도에서 정화 이념을 투철하게 실천하려고 만들어진 영축회의 전모, 성격, 퇴진 등의 문제를 정리한 글이다.
영축회는 1967년 1월에 창립 준비위원회가 열리고, 그해 3월 20일 출범하였다. 영축회는 정화운동을 추진하였던 중견수좌, 율사, 소장파 승려들이 주축이 되어 출범했다. 그들은 대정진, 대화합, 대협조를 내세면서 불교정화의 재가동을 꿈꾸었다. 그러나 결과적으로 영축회의 핵심 지도부의 이탈, 종견 간부들이 선림회라는 새로운 단체로의 이적, 현실과 이상간의 괴리의 심대함 등이 중첩되어 1967년 가을 경에는 퇴진의 길로 갔다.
그러나 1960년대 중반 조계종단 내부에서 불교정화운동을 다시 해야 한다는 일단의 세력들의 고뇌, 조직화 문제, 한계 등의 문제를 살펴봄으로서 향후 이 시대 불교사의 단면을 파악할 수 있었다.

영어초록

During the years of 1950, purification movement of Korean Buddhism had been played very actively in the realm of Korean Buddhism. That movement was a kind of an agony for overcoming Japanese colonial Buddhism as well as formoving toward new concept of Korean Buddhism. However, that movement brought in hot conflict between a priest without a wife(bhiku monk) and a priest with a wife, and resulted in various troubles. Nonetheless, the movement was ended after the establishment of the Korean Buddhism unification order in the April of 1962. The Korean Buddhism unification order had been transformed into Chogye Buddhism Sect order.
There were, however, series of troubles after the establishment of Chogye Buddhism Sect order. Troublesome events were such as the retreat of the monks who took wives from Chogye Buddhism Sect order around the fall of 1962, the conflict arised from the members of Chogye Sect order due to terrestrial interests, the creation of the Wha-Dong committee, the expulsion among Buddhism devotees, the failure in settling the purification spirit. With regard to these troublesome events, whereas there were some members of Chogye Buddhism Sect order who tried to solve the conflict between a bhiku monk and a priest with a wife in order to focus on training apprentices, translating Buddhism sutras, and propagation of Buddhism, there were mainstay and youmg members of Chogye Buddhism Sect order who tried to start the Korean Buddhism purification movement again. This research study investigates the various aspects of Young-Chuk Group who tried to execute the purification spirit faithfully for the 2nd purification campaign engagement. And it also summarizes charateristics of Young-Chuk group members and their resigning.
Young-Chuk Group was launched on the March 20th of 1967 after organizing its own establishment preparation committee in the January of that year. Mainstays of Young-Chuk group were the main heads of priests, the precept defensors, and young priests who led the Korean Buddhism purification campaign. They attempted to restart the Korean Buddhism purification campaign proposing great practice, great union, and great cooperation. However, Young-Chuk Group was faded away around the fall of 1967 due to the withdrawal of main leading members from Young-Chuk Group, the transfer of main heads into new group called as Sunlim, and the big discrepancy between actual situation and ideal status.
This research study has been able to recognize some aspect of Korean Buddhism history by looking at the agony, the organization problem, and the constraint of the priest group who tried to restart the Korean Buddhism purification campaign in the Chogye Buddhism Sect order during the middle period of 1960s.
