초록

(Background and Purpose) Michael Young, a New York-based architect and co-founder of Young & Ayata, explores the often-overlooked role of aesthetics in architecture. He critiques the prevailing notion that architectural aesthetics are secondary to solving societal issues, arguing instead that they profoundly shape social, political, and economic behaviors through spatial experience. Central to his theory is the concept of "Tension Between Reality and Representation," which examines how architectural images mediate between the physical world and its perception. This study aims to analyze how Young's theoretical framework redefines architectural images as tools for exploring new possibilities beyond mere technical or visual representation. By doing so, it seeks to highlight the critical role of aesthetics in reimagining contemporary architecture. (Method) This research adopts a multi-faceted approach to investigate Young's concept. First, it delves into the philosophical underpinnings of his ideas, particularly their connection to Graham Harman's Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO). The study then examines Young's application of digital technologies such as "Photogrammetry" and techniques like "Estrangement" to explore the tension between reality and representation. Key projects, including The Turned Room, Bauhaus Museum Vessel Collective, and DL1310 Apartments, are analyzed to illustrate how these methods create new aesthetic experiences by challenging conventional perceptions of space. Finally, the study evaluates how these approaches contribute to broader discussions on architectural thinking and methodology. (Results) The findings reveal that Young's work transforms architectural images into critical mediators that transcend traditional boundaries between reality and representation. His use of "Photogrammetry" demonstrates how digital distortions and imperfections can inspire creative reinterpretations rather than being seen as limitations. For example, projects like The Turned Room utilize light and color variations captured through "photogrammetry" to blur distinctions between physical accuracy and artistic abstraction.
Similarly, his application of "estrangement" techniques—such as reimagining mundane architectural details in Wall Reveal or designing dynamic window systems in DL1310 Apartments—defamiliarizes everyday spaces, prompting observers to question their assumptions about reality. These methods underscore the potential of architecture to provoke critical reflection while addressing practical concerns. (Conclusions) Young's exploration of "Tension Between Reality and Representation" highlights the transformative potential of aesthetics in contemporary architecture. By integrating philosophical insights from "OOO" with innovative digital techniques, he challenges established norms and opens new avenues for design thinking. His work demonstrates that architectural images are not merely tools for visualization but critical instruments for reconfiguring social and environmental interactions. Ultimately, this study underscores the importance of aesthetics as a means of expanding architectural practice beyond functionalism, offering new ways to engage with the built environment through sensory and aesthetic experiences.
