『기신론』의 마하연체(摩訶衍體)와 마하연자체상용(摩訶衍自體相用)을 둘러싼 원효의 해석과 의의 (The Significance and Interpretation of the Essence of Mahāyāna and the Essence Itself, Characteristics, and Function of Mahāyāna in the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith)

초록

본고는 『기신론』의 마하연체와 마하연자체상용을 둘러싼 원효의 해석을 중심에 두고 그 의미를 찾는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히, 왜 ‘체’와 ‘자체’인지, 마하연자체상용의 독법은 어떻게 되는지. 진여･생멸문과 삼대의 관계 설정의 문제들을 중심적으로 다루었다. 이것들이 『기신론』 주석가의 『기신론』 이해의 큰 틀을 결정하는 중요한 문제이기 때문이다.
이 문제에 대한 원효의 해석에서 지론사나 화엄가의 영향은 찾을 수 없다. 오히려 원효의 해석이 법장에게 많은 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 알 수 있다. 법장은 원효의 『별기』와 『소』를 둘 다 참조하면서 자신의 사유를 구축해간다. 다만, 진여･생멸문과 삼대의 관계에서도 보이듯이 법장이 반드시 원효의 사유를 따르지는 않는다. 사유구조와 문장은 가지고 오지만 결론은 다르기 때문이다. 이러한 점은 원효와 법장을 비교할 때 문헌학적인 엄밀성과 객관성을 요구하는 부분이다.
본고의 문제의식에 대한 원효의 『별기』와 『소』의 관계를 검토해볼 때 두 가지 특징을 찾을 수 있다. 첫째는 『별기』가 서술형인데 비해 『소』는 그것을 명확히 개념화하려는 경향성이 있다는 것이다. 둘째, 『별기』가 종교적 수행자의 입장에서 해석하는 경향성이 발견되는 반면에 『소』는 이론의 정합성을 추구한다. 향후 원효의 마하연체와 마하연자체상용에 대한 해석이 『기신론』 해석 전체에 미치는 영향에 대해서 확대해서 고찰할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This study finds its meaning by focusing on Wonhyo's interpretation of the essence of Mahāyāna(摩訶衍體) and the essence itself, characteristics, and function of Mahāyāna(摩訶衍自體相用) in the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith(大乘起信論). In particular, the issues of why essence(體) and essence itself(自體), the reading method of the essence itself, characteristics, and function of Mahāyāna(摩訶衍自體相用), and the establishment of the relationship between the thusness aspect(眞如門), the arising and ceasing aspect(生滅門), and three kinds of greatness 三大 were mainly deals with. This is because these are important issues that determine the broad framework of the understanding of the structure of the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith of the commentator.
Wonhyo's(元曉) interpretation of this issue had a great influence on the Fazang(法藏), and Fazang builds his own thought by referring to both the Expository Notes to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith(起信論別記) and the Commentary to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith(起信論疏) of Wonhyo. However, as seen in the relationship between the thusness aspect, the arising and ceasing aspect, and three kinds of greatness, Fazang does not necessarily follow Wonhyo's thought. The reason is that Fazang brings Wonhyo’s thought structure and sentences, but his conclusion is different from Wonhyo’s. This point requires philological preciseness and objectivity in the case of a comparison of Wonhyo and Fazang.
Two characteristics can be found when examining the relationship between the Expository Notes to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith and the Commentary to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith of Wonhyo in this part. The first is that the Expository Notes to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith is a narrative type, whereas the Commentary to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith tends to conceptualize its contents. Second is that the Expository Notes to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith is inclined to interpret from the view of a religious practitioner, while the Commentary to the Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith is academic.
