초록

The basic function of Tiandihui’s origin legend was to deliver the found- ing story of the organization to it’s members and help them understand the entrance ritual. Regarding to the relationship between the prediction and the rebellion, the prediction of its origin legend played a positive role in propa- gating during the preparation of it’s rebellion stage. Although there was some fictitious content in the legend, the “Opposing the Qing, Restoring the Ming” prediction, which was connected with the origin legend by the story of the Five Ancestors, had kept the function of “Fictitious Prediction” before the Qing collapsed. When such theory was put into practice, they needed more people’s support. Therefore, as their means of preparation, Tiandihui distributed the handbills that were mainly about “Opposing the Qing, Restor- ing the Ming” in order to stir up the people. When it came closely to the re- belling moment, Tiandihui distributed the long warrants and notification that were also mainly about the “Opposing the Qing, Restoring the Ming” in order to attract more people’s attention. Eventually, in the spring of 1854, the Tian- dihui of Guangzhou area initiated the largest scale rebellion in the history of Tiandihui.
