“極深硏幾”를 통해서 본 儒學의 實踐認識論 (Practical Epistemology of Confucianism -- from the perspective of ‘furthering the depth’(極深) and ‘cultivating the subtle’(硏幾))

초록

진리관이 없는 학문과 문화는 오래 지속될 수 없다. 동아시지역의 학문과 정치와 문화에서 수천년 동안 주도적 지위를 차지한 유학에 고유한 진리관과 그 진리에 도달하기 위한 학문관이 없을 수 없다. 사서와 삼경을 중심으로 삼는 유학의 경전은 유학의 진리를 인식하고 실천하기 위한 기본 텍스트이다.
필자는 유학의 고유한 진리인식론에 실천인식론이라는 이름을 붙여보았다. 실천인식론인 유학의 학문론에 접근하는 방법은 다양하게 열려 있다. 필자는 이 논문을 통하여『주역』 「계사」에 나오는 ‘極深’과 ‘硏幾”라는 용어가 유학의 진리관을 해명하는데 핵심이 되는 개념이라는 것을 밝히고자 시도하였다. 먼저 극심과 연기는 易學의 실천인식론적인 방법이라는 것을 밝히고, 나아가『대학』의 격물치지와 성의 정심 수신, 『중용』의 치중화도 역학의 극심연기론을 계승하고 있음을 밝혔다. 그리고, 聖學과 心法으로 설명되는 퇴계 이황의 학문론은『대학』과『중용』의 학문론을 계승하고 종합한 것이라는 것을 밝혔다. 이렇게 해서 극심연기의 실천인실론은 천년이 넘도록 계승된 유학의 고유한 진리인식의 방법이라는 것을 밝혔다. 유학의 고유한 진리인식론은 과학의 진리인식론과 구별된다. 우리는 서로 다른 진리인식론을 통하여 도달한 진리에 기초하여 위대한 자연에 대한 이해의 관점을 다양하게 하고 이해의 깊이와 폭을 심화시키고 확대해야 한다. 동서문화의 융합이 서로 다른 문화가 지닌 진리관과 학문관에 대한 철저한 이해의 과정을 거치지 않고는 이루어질 수 없음을 생각한다면, 유학의 고유한 진리인식론의 해명은 동서문화의 진정한 융합을 위한 시작이 될 수 있다.

영어초록

Longevity of scholarship and culture cannot be expected without illumination of truth. Confucianism, being the center of East-asian scholarship, politics and culture for thousands of years, cannot be without its unique way of illuminating truth and the scholastic path to that truth. Four Books and Three Classics are the basic texts that render one to recognize Confucian truth and to put it into practice.
I attempt to coin the term that refers to the theory of recognizing truth as ‘practical epistemology.’ The way to approach Confucian studies as ‘practical epistemology’ is open in various forms. In this paper, I strived to uncover the fact that the terms ‘ji-shen’ (極深, furthering the depth) and ‘yan-ji’ (硏幾, cultivating the subtle), seen in the Xi-ci (繫辭) chapter of Book of Changes, are a pair of terms playing a crucial role in explicating Confucian approach to truth. First, I shall delineate the terms ji-shen and yan-ji are the way of practical epistemology in the Study of Changes. Moreover, the terms ge-wu zhi-zhi (格物致知), cheng-yi zheng-xin (誠意正心), xiu-xin (修身) in Great Learning, as well as the terms zhi zhong-hua (致中和) in The Mean are those that follow the legacy of ji-shen and yan-ji. Then it shall be proved that T'oegye Yi Hwang's scholarship represented by the two aspects- the learning of sagehood and the method of the mind is the synthesis and consummation of the theory of Great Learning and The Mean. In effect, I elucidate that the practical epistemology of ji shen and yan-ji are the unique Confucian method of recognizing truth that has been valid for thousands of years.
Practical epistemology unique to Confucianism differs itself from scientific knowledge of truth. We must expand our depth and breadth of understanding of great nature through mutually different ways of recognizing truth. Considering that there is no harmony between the east and west without undergoing rigorous investigation of scholarship and the approach to truth maintained by the other culture, and thereby reaching mutual, thorough understanding, the explication of practical epistemology unique to Confucianism can mark the beginning of real harmony of the eastern and western culture.
