한국 근ㆍ현대사 교과서를 둘러싼 역사인식 갈등 연구: 한국 민족주의의 ‘균열’을 중심으로 (A Study on the Conflict of Historical Recognition in the Textbooks of Korean Modern and Contemporary History: On the Concept of Korean Nationalism)

초록

근대 시기 공통의 혈통, 언어, 역사 등을 토대로 시작된 ‘종족적’ 민족 개념은 식민지 시기를 거치면서 한반도 주민들 사이에서 ‘종족적 정체성’으로 귀착되었다. 그러나 해방 이후 한반도에 두 개의 적대적 국민국가가 수립되자, 기존의 종족적 정체성과 별개로 남북에는 ‘반공ㆍ반소’와 ‘반제ㆍ반미’라는 적대적 이데올로기에 기초한 ‘정치적’ 민족 개념이 새롭게 등장했다. 특히 상대방을 절멸시키려는 전쟁과 적대적 국가 건설과정을 거치면서, 정치적 민족 개념은 ‘정치적 정체성’으로 발전했다. 물론 남북 모두 자신이 한/조선 민족을 대표한다고 주장했지만, 남한에서 종족적 정체성과 정치적 정체성은 일치하기보다는 충돌했다. 고등학교 근․현대사 교과서를 둘러싼 남한 내 갈등은 양자의 충돌을 보여주는 대표적 사례이다. 금성교과서는 종족적 정체성에 근거하여 한국 근․현대사를 평가한 데 비해, 대안교과서는 정치적 정체성에 근거했다. 그 결과 식민지 시기, 분단정부 수립, 통일, 북한 등 개별 쟁점에 대한 양자의 견해가 상치되었다. 결국, 한국 근․현대사를 둘러싼 역사인식의 갈등은 종족적 정체성과 정치적 정체성이라는 한국 민족주의의 균열을 반영한 것이다. 그리고 이는 해방 이후 일민족 일국가라는 민족주의 원칙이 달성되지 못한 분단의 역사가 낳은 불행한 유산이다.

영어초록

The concept of 'ethnic' nation, which initiated in the modern period on the basis of common blood, language, and history, arrived at an 'ethnic identity' among inhabitants in the Korean Peninsula by passing through the colonial period. Since two hostile nation-states were established in the Korean Peninsula after the Liberation, however, apart from the 'ethnic identity', the concept of 'political' nation based on antagonistic ideologies―anti-communism/anti-Soviet Union vs. anti-imperialism/anti-Americanism―newly emerged in both South and North Korea. The concept of political nation developed into 'political identity' throughout the Korean War and the antagonistic process of state-building that aimed to terminate each other. Although both South and North Korea claimed that it represented Korean nation, the ethnic identity and political identity in South Korea came into conflict rather than into agreement. The conflict of historical recognition in the textbooks of Korean modern and contemporary history in South Korea is the representative case that shows the conflict between the ethnic and political identity. While 'Kumsung Textbook' evaluates Korean modern and contemporary history based on the ethnic identity, 'The Alternative Textbook' grounds it in the political identity. As a result, both have different views on individual issues such as the colonial period, the establishment of divided governments, the unification, North Korea, and so on. After all, the conflict of historical recognition for Korean modern and contemporary history reflects the cleavage on Korean nationalism between ethnic and political identity. And this is the unfortunate legacy of the history of division that failed to achieve the principle of nationalism, one state by one nation, after the Liberation.
