요한복음 구조 이해에 대한 새로운 접근－이중 배열법(dual mode)에 기초한 역교차 구조(chiastic structure) (A New Approach to Understanding of the Structure of the Gospel of John: Chiastic Structure Based on the Dual Mode)

This paper aims to illustrate the structure of the Gospel of John, and give an answer to some debatable issues regarding its structure, e.g. (1) the range of introductory part of the Gospel of John, viz., either 1:1-18 or the whole Chapter 1?; (2) the authorship of Chapter 21; (3) the position of the event of cleansing the Temple; (4) the linking part of the Gospel of John, and so on. The Gospel of John has been studied for a long time and many scholars have shown interest in its structure as well as its theological themes. There are, however, different viewpoints on the overall structure of the Gospel of John. Most scholars who have used the thematic approach typically analyze the Gospel of John with a succession structure and its structure is commonly classified into three parts: the Prologue(1:1-18), the body－the book of signs(1:19-12:50) and the book of glory(13:1- 20:31)－and the epilogue(21:1-25). On the other hand, most scholars who have made use of the structural approach have looked for chiastic structure(s), and parallelism as its structure. Their research illustrates the possibility of identifying varied and deep structures within the Gospel of John and suggests that it could be read from multiple angles.


The structure of the Gospel of John is analyzed both on the macro structure and on the micro structure. On the one level, the macro structure is illustrated as the chiastic structure based on `dual mode': A-B-X-B´-A´ pattern. On another level, the micro structure is illustrated by various forms of parallelism and chiasm. This mode is a useful concept to understand the analysis of the complex structure and how each theme is related to each other. In particular, the understanding Johannine 'dual mode' gives a clue to solve the above mentioned problems regarding its structure.
