중부지역 무문토기시대 전기 사회의 동향 - 공렬토기의 확산과 문화변동에 주목하여 - (The Development of the Early Mumun Society in Central Korea - The Diffusion and Cultural Change of Rim-Perforated Pottery -)

초록

1966년 역삼동유적의 발굴 이래 축적된 무문토기시대 연구와 조사 성과는 괄목할만한 수준에 이르렀다. 현재, 방대한 고고자료의 시간 질서를 부여하고 문화내용을 판별할 수 있는 틀을 마련한 것은 지난 반세기 동안의 학문적 성과로 볼 수 있다. 그러나 아직까지 무문토기시대의 사회상이나 문화변동 양상을 다루는 연구는 다소 미진한 실정이다. 특히 무문토기문화의 전개과정을 밝히는데 가장 중요한 열쇠 중 하나인 공렬토기의 등장과 확산에 대한 연구는 별다른 진척을 보이지 못하고 있다. 이에 본고에서는 공렬토기와 관련하여 가장 첨예한 의견 대립을 보이는 주제인 공렬토기의 초현과 배경, 역삼동식 토기의 시간성과 공간성, 흔암리식 토기의 형성에 대한 제 가설을 비판적으로 재검토하였다. 아울러 현재의 자료와 고고학적 양상에 가장 부합할 수 있는 설명 안을 점검하였다.
중부지역 무문토기시대 전기 사회는 거시적이고 미시적인 문화변동 양상에 기초하여 크게 3시기로 구분할 수 있다. 전기 전엽에는 미사리식 토기 외에도 각형토기, 공렬토기, 구순각목토기, 적색마연토기, 음각선토기 등 다양한 토기 양상을 갖는 물질문화가 지역을 달리하여 공존하였다. 전기 중엽, 문화변동의 가장 큰 원인은 단연 역삼동유형의 확산에 있는데 토기 문양의 미시적 변화뿐만 아니라 각 문화유형 간 분포권의 연쇄적인 변화를 초래하게 된다. 전기 후엽 또한 확산과 쇠퇴, 소멸이 맞물린 지역적 경계의 변화상과 함께 문화유형 간 활발한 상호작용에 의한 문화접변 양상을 살필 수 있다. 이 같은 전기 사회의 문화변동 양상은 신석기 최말기 문화와의 접촉, 북으로부터의 영향, 지역 간 상호작용과 문화접변, 확산과 인구 결집, 취락의 재편과 분산 등의 다양한 문화과정이 복잡하게 얽혀 전개된 결과이다.

영어초록

Since the excavation of Yeoksam-dong site in 1996, the results of investigation and research have reached a remarkable level. It seems that academic achievements for last half a century have contributed to setting the present explanatory framework that can temporally order and distinguish cultural aspects. Nevertheless, little is still known about social system or cultural change during the Early Mumun period. Particularly, research on the appearance and spread of the rim-perforated pottery, absolutely necessary for understanding the process of development shows no notable progress. From this perspective, the intent of this study is focused on reevaluating hypotheses previously proposed, extremely debated by scholars, such as the emergence and background of the rim-perforated pottery, the temporality and spatiality of the Yeoksam-dong style pottery, and formation of the Heunam-ri style pottery. In addition to this, I propose a possible alternative that can effectively account to implications of current archaeological data.
The Early Mumun Age (EMA) is divided into three phases based in macroscopic and microscope aspects of cultural change. In the early phase of EMA, in addition to the Misari style pottery a variety of pottery cultures, such as the Gakhyeong style pottery, the perforated rim pottery, the notched lip pottery, the red burnished pottery, and the intaglio-line pattern pottery, have co-existed in different regions. In the middle phase of EMA, a remarkable change, namely diffusion of the Yeoksam-dong style is witnessed, which leads to detailed change in designs of pottery as well as a series of change in the distribution of pottery culture. In the late phase of EMA, we can identify the acculturation by dynamic social interactions, along with change in regional borders of pottery culture interlocking with the spread, decline, and dissolution. These aspects of cultural change in the EMA society indicate that complex social changes, such as the transformation from the late Neolithic culture, impacts from north, the social interaction and acculturation among regions, the diffusion and population packing, and the settlement reorganization and population dispersals, were likely interconnected each other to some extent. More importantly, it is possible that its output would have been an engine for the social development during the EMA.
