문학서 ‘역주행’ 미디어셀러 분석 - 『구의 증명』과 『모순』을 중심으로 (Exploring the 'Reverse Trend' of Media-driven Literary Bestsellers - A Case Study of Proof of Goo and Contradiction)

초록

본고에서는 출간 후 몇 년이 지나 다시 역주행하다가 최근 스테디셀러로 자리 잡은 『모순』과 『구의 증명』을 중심으로 베스트셀러 현상을 분석하였다. 작품 외적 요소에서는 1) 유튜브 ‘플레이리스트’나 북 유튜버, 인스타그램 리뷰 등 뉴미디어의 바이럴 효과, 2) 젊은 세대에게 특히 중요한 디지털 평판과 취향 공동체의 부상, 3) 20~30대 여성의 상대적으로 높은 독서율 등이 『모순』과 『구의 증명』의 역주행을 이끌어낸 것으로 보인다. 물론 특정 작품만 미디어셀러가 되는 데에는 우연성도 작동하고 뛰어난 작품성도 뒷받침되어야 한다. 『모순』의 경우 2010년 중반 이후 여성주의 소설에 대한 관심이 커지자 인기 북 유튜버와 연예인들이 이 소설이 ‘인생 소설’이라고 밝히거나 독서 인증을 하는 경우가 늘어났고, 일인칭 화자의 흡인력 있는 문체, 사랑과 결혼이라는 보편적 주제, 범속하지만 이해하기 쉬운 구도, 다소 극단적인 설정과 주인공의 모순된 선택 등이 흥미를 끌어 신규독자의 유입을 쉽게 끌어올린 것으로 보인다. 『모순』은 자본주의적 욕망을 인간존재의 근원적 모순성으로 미화하고 자기합리화마저 삶의 다양성에 대한 이해로 포장하는 측면도 있는데, 이러한 작품이 역주행 스테디셀러가 되었다는 것은 세속 논리를 비판하면서도 어떻게든 결혼을 둘러싼 현실을 이해하고 수락하고자 하는 젊은 여성 독자들의 욕망과도 맞아떨어졌기 때문이라 할 수 있다. 『구의 증명』은 극한까지 내몰린 처절한 삶과 연인의 시체를 먹는다는 충격적인 설정 때문에 유튜브 플레이스트로 독자의 인상에 더 깊이 자리 잡았다. 세부의 유사성이 존재하기는 하지만 전체적으로는 차이점이 훨씬 많아 드라마 <나의 해방일지>와 이 작품 사이에 직접적 관련이 있다고 보기는 어렵다. 두 작품 다 대중의 인기를 끌었던 것은 작품 간의 구체적 유사성 때문이라기보다 전반적인 주제와 분위기에 청춘 세대가 공명한 까닭이라 보아야 한다. 인간을 사물화하는 후기자본주의 사회에서 내몰리는 삶의 비참과 고독, 서로가 서로의 구원이 될 수밖에 없는 절절한 사랑 등에 독자와 시청자 모두 깊이 공감했을 것이다. 구와 담의 학창 시절 이야기와 자라면서 점차 농밀해지는 사랑, 10대 후반부터 노동에 내몰리는 구의 서사 등은 20~30대 여성뿐 아니라 10대 여성과 20대 남성들에게도 호응을 받은 것으로 보인다. ‘결혼’이라는 통과의례로 나아가며 결국 세속적 현실을 수락하는 『모순』과 자본주의적 삶에 근본적인 질문을 던지며 식인 의식을 치르는 『구의 증명』이 동시대 비슷한 세대에게 큰 인기를 끌고 있다는 것이 한편으로는 매우 아이러니하지만, 현실을 수락할 수밖에 없는 자들에게도 온전한 사랑에의 갈구와 현실을 벗어나고자 하는 열망이 존재할 것이며 극단적인 삶과 죽음에 내몰린 청춘을 안타까워하는 마음에는 현실을 수락한 자의 안도감 역시 함께할 것이므로 역주행 베스트셀러 소설 분석을 통해 청춘 세대의 이중적 욕망과 현실 인식을 함께 읽을 수도 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the bestseller phenomenon, focusing on Contradiction and Proof of Goo, two novels that gained renewed popularity years after publication and have recently established themselves as steady sellers. Regarding external factors, the resurgence of these works appears to be driven by: 1) the viral effect of new media, such as YouTube playlists, book-focused YouTubers, and Instagram reviews, 2) the rising importance of digital reputation and taste communities, particularly among younger generations, and 3) the relatively higher reading rates among women in their 20s and 30s. Of course, serendipity and outstanding literary quality are also crucial for a specific work to become a "media seller." In the case of Contradiction, growing interest in feminist literature since the mid-2010s has led to popular book YouTubers and celebrities labeling it as their "life-changing novel" and posting about reading it. The compelling narrative style of the first-person narrator, its universal themes of love and marriage, its straightforward yet relatable structure, and its somewhat extreme settings and the protagonist’s contradictory choices all contributed to drawing in new readers. The novel's portrayal of capitalist desires as a reflection of humanity's inherent contradictions and its self-justification framed as an understanding of life's diversity resonated deeply with its audience. Its status as a steady seller suggests that young female readers, who critique worldly logic but strive to understand and accept the realities surrounding marriage, found their desires reflected in the novel.
Proof of Goo, on the other hand, left a stronger impression on readers through its shocking premise, which involves a desperate life pushed to the extreme and the act of consuming a lover’s corpse. Its popularity on YouTube playlists solidified its impact. Although some similarities exist, the differences far outweigh them, making it hard to draw a direct link between this novel and the drama My Liberation Notes. The widespread appeal of both works to the public seems to stem not from specific resemblances but rather from their overarching themes and atmospheres that resonate with the youth. Both readers and viewers deeply sympathized with themes of misery and loneliness in a post-capitalist society that dehumanizes individuals, as well as the desperate love that becomes each other's salvation.
The high school experiences of the characters Goo and Dam, their progressively deepening love, and Goo’s narrative of being thrust into labor from his late teens resonated not only with women in their 20s and 30s but also with teenage girls and men in their 20s. It is ironic that Contradiction, which ultimately accepts secular reality through the rite of passage of marriage, and Proof of Goo, which fundamentally questions capitalist life through the shocking ritual of cannibalism, both gained immense popularity among the same generation. However, this duality reflects the desires of those forced to accept reality—longing for perfect love and a yearning to escape it—as well as the sense of relief felt by those who sympathize with the extreme lives and deaths of the youth. Thus, analyzing these reverse bestseller phenomena allows us to read the youth generation's dual desires and perceptions of reality.
