조선후기 호남 북서부지역 소조상 제작기법 및 보존에 대하여 (On the Production and the Preservation of Clay-statues from the Northern Ho-Nam region during the latter-chosun era)

초록

인간은 古來로부터 ‘흙’을 빚어 土器라는 생활용품을 만들었고, 더 나아가 신앙적 의미를 부여한 조각품을 만들었는가 하면 미적, 공예적, 장식적인 요소 등을 보태어 土偶를 만들었다. 이러한 기법이 더욱 발전하여 塑造像이 나오게 되었다. 이렇게 흙을 이용한 공예품은 불교의 유입과 더불어 불상을 조성해야 하는 시대 상황에 따라 다양한 기법을 사용한 미술품으로 발전하였다.
우리나라 소조상의 제작방법은 크게 두 가지로 나눠 볼 수 있는데, 흙을 빚어 성형한 뒤 불에 구운 소성식 방법과 불에 굽지 않고 자연스럽게 건조시킨 자연건조 방법이다. 이러한 조선후기의 소조상 가운데 호남 북서부 지역의 자연건조법에 의해 제작된 소조상들을 중심으로 제작기법을 살펴보았다. 다만 이 지역의 조선후기 소조상은 4-3m에 달하는 거구의 불상과 2m 이하의 불상 등 대형, 중형, 소형 등의 작품들로, 본 연구는 감마선 촬영이 용이한 중형의 소조상에 한정하였다. 연구방법은 감마선 촬영 및 휴대용형광 X-선 분석, SEM, EDS 등의 분석을 통하여 실시하였다. 그 결과 소조상은 두꺼운 나무 판을 사용하여 만들려고 하는 상의 대강의 모습을 조각하고 2번 흙을 붙여가며 형상을 만들었다. 또한 새끼줄은 흙의 처짐을 방지하기 위해 일정한 간격으로 감았음을 확인하였다. 그리고 소조토의 완전 건조 후 터지거나 갈라진 균열을 메우기 위해 호분 또는 한지나 천을 바르고 그 위에 색을 입힌 기법이었음을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

From ancient times, human-beings brew clay, producing life-supplies called "earthenware". In addition, they made not only figures with religious meanings, but also "clay-dolls" by adding artistic and decorative features and employing a further extended techniques to the original craft of producing earthenware. These techniques developed further, resulting in the manufacturing of Clay-statues. Due to the introduction of Buddhism and the opening of an era that required the production of Buddhist statues, the former craft-works developed to artifacts requiring various methods of manufacture.
There exist two different methods of producing Clay-statues, one of which is utilizing the fire -the terracotta-method- and the other being the natural seasoning method. Among the Clay-statues of the latter-Chosun era, statues from the northern Ho-Nam region that employed the natural seasoning method were investigated in this study. The Clay-statues of this region include Buddhist statues of magnitude of 3-4 meters, Buddhist statues with height less than 2 meters, and other statues of varying scale. This study is limited to the medium scale Clay-statues that can be easily used in gamma-ray photography. Gamma-ray photography, portable fluorescence X-ray analysis, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), EDS, etc, were the investigation methods. As a result of this study, the Clay-statues' crafting method was found. The Clay-statues were produced by first sculpting and carving out, from a thick timber panel, an estimation of the desired shape of the statue. Second, clay was appended twice to the carved out figure, resulting in the statues' present shape. Also, threads of straw ropes were employed regularly, coiled around the clay-statue to prevent the hanging down of the clay. In addition, after the clay was completely seasoned, techniques of attaching Ho-Boon (shell-powder), Han-Ji (Korean traditional paper), or fabric to the Clay-statues, then painting color above them, were used to avoid the clay from tearing apart and to fill in the cracks.
