초록

이 글은 2022 개정 역사 교육과정의 융합 선택 과목인 「역사로 탐구하는 현대 세계」(이하 「현대 세계」)가 개발되는 과정을 기록하였다. 교육과정은 다음의 네 단계를 거쳐 개발되었다. 첫째, 요구 조사에 따라 과목을 개설하는 단계, 둘째, 과목의 성격 및 목표를 설정하는 단계, 셋째, 내용을 선정하는 단계, 넷째, 내용 조직을 조직하는 단계이다.
「현대 세계」는 역사 탐구 과목이 필요하다는 학교 현장의 요구를 반영해 개설하였다. 「현대 세계」는 교육과정의 ‘성격과 목표’에서 학생을 학습의 능동적 참여자이자 역사 행위자로, 미래를 만들어갈 주체로 진술하였다. 「현대 세계」는 생태환경의 문제, 오늘날의 자본주의, 민주주의의 위기, 폭력과 평화, 모두 4가지 대주제를 선정하고, 다음과 같이 내용을 조직하였다.
첫째, 주제를 중심으로 내용을 구성하되 시계열성을 고려하였다. 둘째, 역사 탐구 방안의 하나로 공공역사(public history)를 포함하여 역사 탐구의 영역을 확장하였다. 셋째, 역사의 시선을 다원화할 수 있도록 내용을 조직하였다. 기존 역사 서사에서 소외되기 쉬웠던 라틴 아메리카, 아프리카, 서남아시아 내용을 넣고, 국가-지역-세계를 오가며 역사를 바라볼 수 있는 사례를 포함해 내용을 구성하였다.
「현대 세계」는 학생들에게 역사를 만나는 새로운 방식을 제안한다. 「현대 세계」의 학습 경험을 통해, 학생들이 자신이 살아갈 세상을 조망하고 동시에 행위 주체로서 자신의 삶과 공동체를 가꾸어 나갈 수 있기를 희망한다.

This article analyzes the development process of “Exploring the Modern World through History” (hereafter, “Modern World”), an interdisciplinary elective course in the 2022 revised curriculum, to summarize the development logic and issues raised. The curriculum was developed through the following steps: First, the creation of the course based on the needs survey; second, the setting of the nature and goals of the course; third, the selection of the content; and fourth, the organization of the content.
“Modern World” was developed in response to school sites' needs for a course that explores history. The nature and goals of the “Modern World” curriculum describe students as active participants in learning, as actors in history, as subjects who will shape the future, and as beings who search for the relevance of history to their own lives. “Contemporary World” selected four major themes: the ecological environment, the problems of capitalism today, the crisis of democracy, and the problems of violence and peace, and organized the contents in the following ways: First, the contents are organized around the themes in consideration of time series. Second, we expanded the scope of historical inquiry by including public history in the curriculum while considering ways to explore history. Third, we organized the content to diversify perspectives. We organized the content to diversify the perspectives of history so that students could be interested in Latin America, Africa, and Southwest Asia, which were easily marginalized in the existing historical narratives. We also organized the content to include relevant cases so that the gaze of history can move between countries, regions, and the world.
“The Modern World” course can offer students a new framework and a way of encountering history. We hope that the creation of a new history course will allow students to share historical research and problems in response to changes in the world and to look at both their lives and historical awareness as they change from day to day.
