淸代 繙譯考試와 經書 滿譯本 제작 연구 (A Study on the Imperial Translation Examination of the Qing Dynasty and the Publication of the Confucian Classics Translated into Manchu)

초록

본고에서는 청대(淸代)에 팔기(八旗)의 만주⋅몽고 기인(旗人)을 대상으로 시행된 번역고시(繙譯考試)의 문제 출제 양상에 대해 고찰하고, 번역고시의 범위였던 경서(經書) 만역본(滿譯本)의 제작 및 변천 과정을 고찰했다. 우선 『흠정과장조례(欽定科場條例)』, 『번역고시제(繙譯考試題)』, 청대 작성된 상주문(上奏文) 등을 분석해 번역고시의 출제 경향을 파악했다. 청 황제는 만문 작문 논제를 직접 출제함으로써 번역고시에 관여했고, 번역 문제는 경서의 내용을 정사(政事)와 연관 짓거나 선발하는 관직의 직무 특성에 따라 문제의 내용도 달라지는 경향을 보였다. 번역고시의 번역 문제 및 논제는 모두 흠명으로 제작한 만역 경서에서 출제되었는데, 만역본 『사서오경(四書五經)』을 비롯해 『번역효경(繙譯孝經)』이 청대 내내 번역고시 범위에 포함된 것이 특징적이었다.
이에 번역고시의 시행과 더불어 청조의 만주어 정책은 곧 번역경서 제작에 직결되었다. 건륭기에는 한자를 만주어로 번역할 때 음역(音譯) 대신 의역(意譯)하는 방식의 신청어(新淸語)가 제정되었는데, 이는 만역본 경서의 제작과 번역고시에도 여실히 반영되었다. 도광 연간에 번역고시 응시자격을 주방팔기(駐防八旗)로 확대한 이후, 주방팔기에서 자체적으로 번역사서의 선본을 간행한 것 역시 번역고시와 만역 경서 간의 관련성을 입증한다. 이상의 연구를 통해 본고는 ‘팔기의 만주어 능력 신장⋅번역 인재 양성을 위한 번역고시 시행⋅경서 만역본 제작’이라는 세 요소가 청대 내내 어떤 방식으로 서로 밀접하게 연관되어 운영되었는지 그 면모를 밝혔다는 데에 연구 의의가 있다.

This paper examines the pattern of questions in the imperial translation examination (繙譯考試) administered to the Manchurian and Mongolian bannermen (旗人) of the Eight Banners (八旗) during the Qing Dynasty, and examines the production and evolution of the Confucian classics (經書) translated into Manchu-language that were the scope of the imperial translation examination.
First, the tendency of questions in the imperial translation examination was analyzed by analyzing the Heumjeong-guajangjorye (欽定科場條例), Beonyeok-gosije (繙譯考試題) and the Qing Dynasty's petitions (上奏文). The Qing emperors were directly involved in the imperial translation examination by creating essays on Manchu writing. At that time, translation questions was presented by linking the contents of the Confucian classics to government affairs, and the content of the questions tended to vary depending on the job characteristics of the official being selected. The translation questions and essay topics of the imperial translation examination were all from the Confucian classics translated into Manchu by order of the emperor. it was characteristic that the Manchu version of Four Books and Five Classics (四書五經) as well as Beonyeok-hyogyeong (繙譯孝經) were included in the scope of the imperial translation examination throughout the Qing Dynasty.
Accordingly, along with the implementation of the imperial translation examination, the Qing Dynasty’s Manchu policy was directly linked to the production of translated Confucian classics. During the Qianlong (乾隆) period, the New Qing Language (新淸語) was established, which involved translating Chinese characters into Manchu by paraphrasing (意譯) them instead of transliterating (音譯). This was clearly reflected in the production of Manchu translations of the Confucian classics and the imperial translation examination. After the imperial translation examination qualifications were expanded to the Eight Banners' Garrison (駐防八旗) during the Daoguang (道光) era, Eight Banners' Garrison published their own selections of translated Four Books (四書), which also proves the connection between the imperial translation examination and the translated Confucian classics into manchu.
Through the above research, the significance of this paper lies in the way it has revealed how the three elements of ‘improving Manchu language skills of the Eight Banners (八旗), implementing imperial translation examinations to cultivate translation talents, and producing Manchu-language Confucian classics (經書) were closely interrelated and operated throughout the Qing Dynasty.
