초록

이 논문은 양기탁의 서간도지역에서 독립운동의 실상과 그 역할을 살펴보는데 있다. 서간도에는 많은 독립운동 지도자들이 활동하였다. 이 가운데 서간도지역의 독립운동을 통합하려는 통일지도자의 역할을 한 인물, 서간도지역을 독립운동의 중심지로 삼으려는 대표적인 인물이 양기탁이었다.
양기탁은 1915년 서간도로 망명하여 독립운동의 통합을 적극 추진하였다. 그 방법으로는 서간도에 독립운동 중심기관을 설치하여 각 지역의 독립운동단체를 통합하는 것이었다. 그는 한인 자치기구의 성격을 가진 동성한족생계회 조직에 참여하였고, 러시아 연해주지역의 독립운동과 연계하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한인사회당의 무장부대 편성사업에 동참하여 서간도에서 훈련받은 청년들을 하바로프스크의 사관학교로 편입시켰다.
경신참변 이후 양기탁은 서간도로 다시 망명하여 서간도 독립군단의 통합을 주도하였다. 그는 통군부가 확대개편을 시도하자 독립군지도자들의 만나 통합을 설득하여 통의부 결성을 이끌어 냈다. 이후 통의부에서 의군부가 분립되고 상해에서 열린 국민대표회의가 실패하자, 서간도 독립군단의 재통합에 나섰다. 그는 통의부에서 나와 길림의 의성단을 중심으로 독립군단의 통합을 추진하여 정의부의 결성을 주도하였다. 여기서 더 나아가 그는 정당을 통한 독립운동의 통합을 추진하여 고려혁명당을 결성하기에 이르렀다. 정의부·천도교연합회·형평사·러시아에서 활동한 독립운동가들과 협력을 통해 국내와 연계하여 서간도를 중심으로 독립운동을 결집하려는 것이었다.
양기탁은 서간도 독립군단의 통합활동을 추진하면서 서간도지역을 독립운동 중심지로 만들고자 하였다. 그는 국민대표회의 이후 임시정부에서 정의부·신민부와의 협력을 위해 요인들을 파견하였을 때, 임시정부를 만주지역으로 옮겨 새로운 독립운동기관으로 개조하고자 하였다. 또한 임시정부에서는 그에게 국무령을 제안하였으나, 서간도를 독립운동의 중심지로 만들고자 취임하지 않았다.
양기탁은 서간도지역을 독립운동 중심지로 만들기 위해 한인사회 기반을 건설하는 사업에 매진하였다. 한인사회는 독립운동의 인적·물질적 기반이 되는 것으로 독립운동의 기초와 같았다. 그는 1920년 경신참변으로 인해 큰 타격을 받은 서간도지역의 한인사회 기반을 재건하는 것이 서간도지역 독립운동을 일으키는 것이라고 보고 활동에 나섰다. 그는 이상촌 건설을 목표로 사업을 추진하였다. 만주농업사를 설립한 것, 정의부를 통해 유한농업사 설립한 것, 안창호와 농민호조사 사업을 추진한 것이 그러한 시도였다. 또한 귀화한족생계회를 조직하여 중국당국으로부터 자치활동을 인정받고, 조선혁명자후원회를 통하여 독립운동가들과 그 가족들의 후원하여 한인사회의 통합을 위해 노력하였다.
서간도지역에는 수많은 독립군단들이 결성되어 활동하였고, 그 지도자들이 추구하는 독립운동의 이념과 노선도 다양하였다. 이러한 서간도지역 독립운동을 통합하여 그 역량을 하나로 결집시킨 것이 양기탁이었다. 이와 함께 한인사회의 기반을 건설하여 서간도를 독립운동의 중심지로 만들고자 추진한 활동들은 서간도지역 독립운동에 있어 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다.

영어초록

This thesis aims to examine the independence movement of Yang Gi-Tak in West-Gando and his significance. Many independence movement leders were fighting for independence in West-Gando. The leading figure who endeavored to unify the independence movement and place its center in West-Gando was Yang Gi-Tak.
Yang Gi-Tak exiled to West-Gando in 1915 and worked to unify independence movement. To do so, he established a central organization to unite independence movement groups for independence from different regions. He joined the Korean autonomous group, Dongsung Korean Livelihood, and attempted to associate with the independence movement in Russian Mritime Province of Siberia. For this purpose he cooperated with Haninsahuidang in organizing armed troops and transferred the students trained in West-Gando to Khabarovsk military school.
After Kyungsin incident, Yang Gi-Tak exiled to West-Gando once again and led the independence movement groups to unite each other in West-Gando. When Tonggunbu tried to expand and reorganize, he persuade the independence movement leaders to unite and succeed in establishing Tongeuibu. When Uigunbu was separated from Tongeuibu and the Korean National Delegates Council failed in Shanghai, he again attempted to unite the independence corps in West-Gando. He left Tongeuibu and founded Jungeuibu by uniting the corps with Uisungdang as center. Moreover, he attempted to unite the independence movement through political party and founded Goryohyukmyungdang in order to unify the independence movement revolving around West-Gando with the associating of Jungeuibu, Cheondogyo association, Hyungpyungsa and independence activists in Russia.
Yang Gi-Tak tried to build the center of independence movement in West-Gando region while unifying the independence corps in West-Gando. When dispatching the agents for the cooperation of Jungeuibu and Sinminbu in the Korean provisional government after the Korean National Delegates Council, he attempted to reorganize the Korean provisional government into a renovative independence movement organization in Manchuria. He was recommended for prime minister as the Korean provisional government’s effort to strengthen its status, however he rejected in order to build the center of independence movement in West-Gando.
In order to build the center in West-Gando, Yang Gi-Tak devoted himself to establishing the foundation of Korean society. This society is the basis of independence movement for human and material resource. However, Kyungsin incident in 1920 greatly damaged the Korean society in West-Gando. Yang Gi-Tak realized that recovering the foundation of Korean society would lead to the independence movement of West-Gando. He aimed for an ideal village so that he established Manchuria Agriculture Company and Yuhan Agriculture Company with Jungeuibu and performed the survey of farming population with An Chang-Ho. He also had the Organization of Naturalized Koreans approved for autonomy by the Chinese government and supported independence movement and their families through Chosun Supporters Association for Revolutionists.
A number of independence coprs were active in West-Gando and the ideology and directions of their leaders also varied. It is Yang Gi-Tak who collected these activities to concentrate their strength. Additionally, his activities to establish the center of independence movement in West-Gando with the foundation of Korean society are significant in the independence movement of West-Gando.
