재편된 공간-조선시대 驛 분포 양상의 추이와 특징 (Reorganized Space - Changes and Features in the Distribution of Yeok(驛) in the Joseon Dynasty)

초록

조선이라는 새로운 체제의 선언과 동시에 진행된 통치 영역 전반을 연결하는 교통기관의 재편성 사례는, 지리적 환경이라는 절대적 조건을 과거로부터 연속적으로 수용하면서도 해당 시간에 자리한 정치체가 정의한 공간 구조로 수렴하는 고유의 공간 기획이 실천되었음을 시사한다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 본 연구는 과거의 환경에서 교통과 통신을 제어하는 기능을 수행한 제도적 기관 가운데 육상의 역을 주제로 한다.
본론에서는 조선시대 역의 분포 양상 변화를 추적하면서 계기마다의 정치적 환경적 변수를 분석하고, 연속적 시간 단면의 공간 분석을 통해 특정 시점의 양태에 스며들어 있는 인위성을 가시화했다. 변화의 추이를 요약하면, 15세기 전반 군현과 역의 관계가 재편되는 과정에서 역의 분포 양상이 변화한 이후, 영토의 확장이 이루어지는 양계 지역을 제외하고는 대체로 상태가 유지되었다. 18세기에는 양계를 중심으로 역이 증설되고 분포 범위도 이전보다 확장되었으나, 19세기에는 다시 18세기 이전의 규모로 복구된 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.
변화의 양적 규모와 투영된 의도, 그로 인한 거시적 구조의 변동을 고려한다면, 『세종실록』 지리지 이후 역 분포 양상의 추이는 이전 고려 말 조선 초 시기와 대비해 정적이고 단편적인 변화로 묘사할 수 있다. 특정 시점에 역 수가 늘어난 원인은 통치 영역의 확장과 직접적인 관계를 맺고 있었다. 요컨대 15세기 초 군현과 역의 관계가 정치체에 의해 재정립되는 시점은 교통·통신체계의 맥락에서 통치 영역 전반에 관성이 드리워지는 시기로 표현할 수 있으며, 관성의 범위는 후대의 확장된 영역까지 연장되었다.
이상의 연구 사례는 정치체의 공간 기획과 재편 작업이 어떻게 환경적 조건을 수용하고 계승하는 형태로 구현될 수 있는지를 보여준다는 점에서, 과거를 상상하는 기성의 틀을 비틀어 놓는다. 예컨대 정치와 자연의 길항적 혹은 이원적 구도를 흔들어보는 시도이며, 나아가 이러한 상상이 특정 시간대에만 유의미한 것이 아니라 현재에 가닿을 수 있음을 이해할 때, 과거와 지금을 연결하는 경험이 된다.

영어초록

The reorganization of transportation systems connecting the entire territory of the Joseon Dynasty, which coincided with the declaration of a new regime, suggests that unique spatial planning was practiced that continuously accepted the absolute conditions of the geographical environment from the past while converging on the spatial structure defined by the political entity in place at the time. In this context, this study focuses on Yeok(驛) as one of the institutional institutions that performed the function of controlling transportation and communication in the past.
In this paper, we trace the changes in the distribution of Yeok(驛) during the Joseon Dynasty to analyze the political and environmental variables of each period, and visualize the intentionality of the distribution at one point in time through statistical and spatial analysis of before and after. To summarize the trend of change, the distribution of Yeok(驛) changed during the reorganization of the relationship between Gun-Hyeon(郡縣) and Yeok(驛) in the first half of the 15th century, and then remained largely unchanged, except in the Yanggye(兩界), where territorial expansion occurred. In the 18th century, the number of Yeok(驛) increased, centered on the Yanggye(兩界), and the distribution range was more extensive than before, but in the 19th century, it recovered to its pre-18th century scale. Considering the quantitative scale of the change, the projected intentions, and the resulting changes in the macro-structure, the trend of the station distribution after 『Sejong Sillok(世宗實錄)』 「Jiriji(地理志)」 can be explained as a static and piecemeal change compared to the late Goryeo period to the early Joseon period. At any given point in time, the increase in the number of Yeok(驛) was directly related to the geographical expansion of the ruling realm. In short, the early 15th century, when the relationship between counties and stations was redefined by the political entity, can be described as a period when inertia begins to loom over the entire dominion. This rule of inertia also applied to expanded territories.
The above examples twist conventional ways of imagining the past by showing how spatial planning and reorganization by political entities can take the form of accommodating and inheriting environmental conditions. For example, it can twist opposing or binary views of politics and nature. This imagining can be an experience that connects the past with the present.
