한국수어의 시간 은유에 대하여 - 한국어와의 비교를 중심으로 (A Study on the Time Metaphor of the Korean Sign Language -Focusing on comparison with the Korean Language)

초록

본 연구는 한국수어의 시간 은유를 한국어와 비교하여 살펴보고, 우리 문화권에 존재하는 시간 은유를 종합하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 국립국어원에서 제공하는 한국수어사전 및 한국수어 자료 통합 지원 시스템(KSLhub)의 말뭉치를 활용하여 한국수어에 존재하는 시간 관련 단어, 구, 문장 표현을 수집한 뒤, Lakoff(2003)의 개념적 은유 이론을 바탕으로 은유 분석을 수행하였다.
우리 문화권에 존재하는 시간 은유는 개념적 은유의 유형 분류에 따라 구조적 은유, 존재론적 은유, 방향적 은유로 나눌 수 있다. 먼저 한국수어와 한국어에 공통으로 존재하는 시간의 구조적 은유에는 [시간은 자원/돈이다], [시간은 공간이다], [시간은 이동이다]가 있다. 이러한 은유는 시간과 관련된 다양한 구, 문장에서 확인할 수 있다. 시간의 개념적 은유 중 구조적 은유는 한국수어와 한국어에서 가장 유사한 양상을 보이는 특징이 있다.
다음으로 한국수어와 한국어에 모두 존재하는 시간의 존재론적 은유에는 [시간은 사물이다]가 있다. 이러한 은유 또한 시간과 관련된 구, 문장에서 찾을 수 있다. 그런데 한국어에서는 [시간은 그릇이다], [시간은 사람이다]라는 존재론적 은유가 뚜렷하게 나타나는 반면에, 한국수어에서는 이와 같은 은유를 좀처럼 찾기 어렵다는 점에서 차이가 있다.
마지막으로 시간의 방향적 은유는 여러 가지 단어에 내재되어 있으며, 수평적 시간 은유와 수직적 시간 은유를 찾을 수 있다. 먼저 한국수어에서는 수평적 시간 은유로 [과거는 뒤쪽, 미래는 앞쪽] 은유와 [과거는 왼쪽, 미래는 오른쪽] 은유가 나타난다. 한편, 한국어에서는 [과거는 뒤쪽, 미래는 앞쪽] 은유와 [과거는 앞쪽, 미래는 뒤쪽] 은유가 동시에 나타나 외견상의 모순을 보여주며, [과거는 왼쪽, 미래는 오른쪽] 은유는 존재하지 않는다. 그리고 수직적 시간 은유의 경우에는 [과거는 위쪽, 미래는 아래쪽] 은유가 한국수어와 한국어에 공통적으로 존재하며, 사용 범위에서 다소 차이가 있다. 시간의 방향적 은유 표현은 대체로 한국어보다 한국수어에서 더 폭넓게 나타나는 것이 특징이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to compare the time metaphor of the Korean sign language with the Korean language, and synthesize the time metaphor of our culture. Using the Korean sign language dictionary and Korean sign language corpus(in KSLhub) provided by the National Institute of Korean language, time related words, phrases and sentences in the Korean sign language were collected, and metaphor analysis was performed based on the conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff(2003).
The time metaphor that exists in our culture can be divided into structural metaphor, ontological metaphor, and orientational metaphor according to the type classification of conceptual metaphors. First, a structural metaphor of time that commonly exists in both the Korean sign language and the Korean language includes [Time is resource/money], [Time is space], and [Time is movement]. This metaphor is identified in various phrases and sentences related to time. Of the conceptual metaphors of time, the structural metaphor has the most similar features in both the Korean sign language and the Korean language.
Next, an ontological metaphor of time that exists in both the Korean sign language and the Korean language includes [Time is an object]. This metaphor is also identified in phrases and sentences related to time. However, while the ontological metaphor of [Time is a container] and [Time is a person] appears in the Korean language, there is a difference in that it is difficult to find such metaphor in the Korean sign language.
Lastly, an orientational metaphor of time is inherent in many words, and can be found in horizontal time metaphor and vertical time metaphor. First, in the Korean sign language, as a horizontal time metaphor, there are a metaphor of [The past is backward, the future is forward] and a metaphor of [The past is left, the future is right]. On the other hand, in the Korean language, there is a concurrent appearance of a metaphor of [The past is backward, the future is forward] and a metaphor of [The past is forward, the future is backward], which is contradictory to each other, and there is no metaphor of [The past is left, the future is right]. In the case of vertical time metaphor, a metaphor of [The past is upper and the future is lower] commonly exists in both the Korean sign language and the Korean language, and there are some differences in the range of use. The orientational metaphor of time is generally characterized by a wider range of appearance in the Korean sign language than in the Korean language.
