金宇顒이 지은 「南冥先生行狀」의 敍事에 대하여 (Study on the Narrative of Nammyeongseonsaenghaengjang by Kim Woo-ong)

초록

이 글은 金宇顒이 지은 「南冥先生行狀」을 鄭仁弘이 지은 「南冥曺先生行狀」과 비교 분석하여 敍事의 특징을 논한 것으로 그 요지는 아래와 같다.
서사구조의 측면에서, 김우옹은 전체를 생애-졸기-행적 세 부분으로 나누고, 생애와 행적을 세부적으로 나누어 서술하지 않았으며, 행적보다 생애에 더 치중하여 기술하였고, 남명의 자질과 교육에 중점을 두어 서술하였다.
서사내용의 측면에서 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 1)학문전환에 대해 정인홍은 爲學에 포함시켰는데 김우옹은 별도로 구분하여 서술하였으며, 2)「을묘사직소」와 「무진봉사」에 대해 정인홍은 간단히 언급하였는데 김우옹은 주요 내용을 직접 인용하였으며, 3)도덕에 대해 정인홍은 심성수양을 통해 天德을 이룩한 점을 중시한 반면 김우옹은 남명의 資稟과 氣像에 중점을 두었으며, 4)공부에 대해 정인홍은 格物致知와 存養省察을 모두 언급한 반면 김우옹은 省察克治에 중점을 두었으며, 5)학문성취에 대해 정인홍은 주자학을 바탕으로 일가의 학문을 이룬 점을 서술했는데 김우옹은 自得과 致用實踐을 급무로 여겼다는 점을 언급하였으며, 6)국가와 백성을 걱정한 점에 대해 정인홍은 소상하게 서술했는데 김우옹은 세상사를 잊지 못하는 측면을 간단하게 언급했으며, 7)교육에 대해 정인홍은 짧게 서술한 반면 김우옹은 남명의 말을 인용하여 상세히 거론했으며, 8)취향에 대해 정인홍은 언급한 것이 없는 반면 김우옹은 비교적 소상히 서술했으며, 9)전체적으로 정인홍은 남명의 道學者像을 부각시켰는데 김우옹은 남명의 자품과 기상을 바탕으로 高士像을 드러내는 데 주안점을 두었다.
2편 행장의 서사의 유사성을 검토한 결과, 김우옹이 먼저 행장을 지었는데 정인홍이 그 내용을 불만족스럽게 여겨 다시 지은 것으로 드러났다.
김우옹의 「남명선생행장」을 성운의 묘갈명 및 곽종석의 묘지명과 개괄적으로 비교해 본 결과, 1)구성비율의 측면에서 성운은 행적에 비중을 두었는데 김우옹은 생애에 더 비중을 두었으며, 2)세부항목을 보면 묘갈명은 25개, 묘지명은 18개인데 비해 김우옹이 지은 행장은 13개로 현저히 적으며, 3)세부항목 구성비율로 보면 성운과 곽종석은 항목을 두루 갖추어 서술하고 있는데 김우옹은 특정 부분을 집중적으로 서술하고 있다. 이를 통해 김우옹이 지은 행장의 서사는 주요 항목을 특징적으로 서술하는 데 중점을 둔 것을 확인할 수 있다.
김우옹이 지은 「남명선생행장」에 대해서는 그 동안 별문제가 없다가, 근세에 남명의 후손 曺庸相이 「踣德山碑理由」와 「先子門下敍述考證」을 지음으로써 논쟁이 일어났다. 남명 후손들은 김우옹과 정인홍의 행장 및 허목의 신도비명에서 남명의 진면목을 드러내지 못해 남명의 순정한 도학에 대해 후세 의심을 갖게 되었다고 생각하여 바로잡으려 하고, 남명 문인의 문중에서는 자기 선조의 글을 비난한 것에 대해 정면 대응함으로써 논쟁이 야기된 것이다.

영어초록

This study compared and analyzed Nammyeongseonsaenghaengjang by Kim Woo-ong with Nammyeongjoseonsaenghaengjang by Jeong In-hong and discussed its narrative characteristics. The findings were summarized as follows:In terms of narrative structure, Kim woo-ong divided the book into three parts of life, talent, and achievements, offered no detailed description of life and achievements, placed more focus on life than achievements, and gave a description with a greater focus on the talent and education of Nammyeong.
The findings in terms of narrative content were as follows: 1) while Jeong In-hong included him in Wuihak in terms of academic switch, Kim Woo-ong separated him for description; 2) while Jeong In-hong briefly mentioned "Eulmyosajikso" and "Mujinbongsa," Kim Woo-ong directly quoted their main content; 3) while Jeong In-hong emphasized the fulfillment of godly virtues through the cultivation of mind in terms of morality, Kim Woo-ong placed more focus on the disposition and spirit of Nammyeong; 4) while Jeong In-hong mentioned both Gyeokmulchiji and Jonyangseongchal for study, Kim Woo-ong stressed Seongchalgeukchi more; 5) as for Nammyeong's academic achievement, Jeong described that he achieved the study of his family based on neo-Confucianism, Kim stated that he found urgent business in Jadeuk and Chiyongshilcheon; 6) while Jeong provided a detailed description of his worry over the nation and people, Kim briefly mentioned that he did not forget the worldly matters; 7) while Jeong briefly mentioned education, Kim discussed it in a detailed manner by quoting Nammyeong; 8) while Jeong made no mention of taste, Kim gave a relatively detailed description of it; and 9) while Jeong highlighted Nammyeong's Dohakjasang overall, Kim placed more focus on revealing his Gosasang based on his disposition and spirit.
The study also reviewed the two Haengjangs in terms of narrative similarity and estimated that Jeong had complaints about the content of Kim's Haengjang and thus rewrote it.
Nammyeongseonsaenghaengjang by Kim Woo-ong was in general compared with Myogalmyeong by Seong Woon and Myojimyeong by Gwak Jong-seok. The results were as follows: 1) while Seong Woon placed more emphasis on his achievements in terms of component ratio, Kim did on his life; 2) while Myogalmyeong and Myojimyeong contained 25 and 18 detailed items, respectively, Kim's Haengjang had considerably fewer 13; and 3) as for the component ratio of detailed items, Seong Woon and Gwak Jong-seok described all the items widely, Kim focused his description on certain parts. Those findings indicate that the narrative of Kim's Haengjang highlighted and described only major points.
There had been no particular issues with Nammyeongseonsaenghaengjang by Kim Woo-ong until Jo Yong-sang, a descendent of Nammyeong, wrote Bukdeoksanbiyiyu and Seonjamunhaseosulgojeung and stirred controversy in modern times. Controversy was provoked between the descendents of Nammyeong that believed that Haengjangs like the ones by Kim Woo-ong and Jeong In-hong failed to display his real worth and made later generations doubtful about his pure ethics and thus tried to correct them and the families of Nammyeong writers that confronted the criticisms of writings of their ancestors.
