『삼국유사』의 은사와 일사 ― 「避隱」편과 관련하여 ― (Hermits in Overlooked Historical Record)

초록

이 논문에서는 은사와 일사의 삶이 모습이 무엇이며 어떤 것인가에대해 구명한 글이다. 논자는 『삼국유사』(5권 9편 138조목)에 실린 은사와 일사의 전수(全數) 조사 아래 「피은」편과 이외의 편에 실린 은사와 일사의 삶과 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 「피은」과 「피은」 이외편의 은사와 일사는 우리의 삶에서 물러남과 나아감 혹은 숨음과드러남의 참다운 의미가 무엇이며 그 의미는 어디에서 실현되어야하는지를 시사해 주어 왔다.
종래에 우리는 세간적 출사와 출세간의 출가 무대를 다르게 인식해왔다. 하지만 물러남과 나아감, 숨음과 드러남의 경계에서는 세간적 삶과 출세간적 삶의 무대가 다르지 않다. 세간의 출사자는 임금을 위하여 충성을 다하는 근왕(勤王)의 삶을 살아야 하고, 출세간의출가자는 출세간의 수행적 삶을 살면서 출출세간의 이타적 삶을 실천해야 하기 때문이다.
대개 우리는 중도에 대한 무지에서 비롯된 ‘불만족의 삶’과 연기에대한 무명에서 비롯된 ‘불안정의 앎’으로 고통스러운 일상을 살고있다. 어떻게 해야 우리는 이같은 불만족의 삶과 불안정의 앎에서벗어날 수 있을까? 붓다는 사성제의 이해와 팔정도의 실천을 통해존재에 대한 안정의 앎과 현실에 대한 만족의 삶의 통로를 열어주었다. 고통의 굴레에서 벗어나는 해탈의 길과 영원히 자유로운 걸림 없는 열반의 길은 서로 이어진다. 해탈은 우리의 앎을 자유롭게해 주고, 열반은 우리의 삶을 자재롭게 해주기 때문이다.
『삼국유사』가 보여주는 은사와 일사의 삶은 시종일관 이름 세 글자의 겉껍데기에 목숨을 걸고 사는 출사자와 출가자에게 허명과 허상을 일깨워 준다. 은사와 일사는 이름 세 글자를 벗어나야 해탈적앎을 얻을 수 있고, 이름 세 글자를 버려야 열반적 삶을 살 수 있음을 시사해 주고 있다. 해탈은 자유에 닿아있고 열반은 자재에 닿아있다. 이 때문에 해탈의 앎과 열반의 삶은 소통될 수 있는 것이다.
지성적 앎과 지성적 삶도 마찬가지이다.
일연이 『삼국유사』의 여러 편목에서 보여주고자 했던 것은 중도 자비의 삶과 연기 지혜의 앎의 소통이었다. 고려 후기 전란 당시의지식인들의 모습은 기대에 미치지 못하였다. 그래서 그는 고대 사국의 역사에서 지성적 삶을 보여준 고승 즉 성사를 ① 은사 일사로서의 삶, ② 풍류 도인으로서의 삶, ③ 국사 왕사로서의 삶으로 보여주었다. 이러한 지성들의 삶의 모습은 『섭대승론석』의 구절처럼“출세출세법은 세간법을 치유하는 법이고, 출출세법은 출세법을 치료하는 법이다”고 한 것에서 알 수 있듯이 물러남과 나아감은 출세간법의 치유와 출출세법 즉 입세법의 치료가 부처와 보살의 자비행의 다른 표현임을 알 수 있게 한다.
개인과 공인, 즉 사적 인간과 공적 인간의 지향과 취향은 동일하지않다. 하지만 국난에 접하게 되면 그 지향과 취향은 만날 수밖에없다. 무엇보다도 전쟁에서 살아남아야 하기 때문이다. 또 우리가역사 속에서 지성적 삶을 담보하려면 역사 위에서 법력을 기르며살아야만 한다. 법력은 불법의 위력이자 진리 수행을 통해 터득한지혜의 힘이기 때문이다. 고승 즉 성사는 진리 수행을 통해 불법의위력을 터득한 존재이자 진리에 대한 확신을 통해 불법의 위력을자기화한 존재라고 할 수 있다. 이들은 「피은」과 「피은」 이외의 편목에서 물러남과 나아감 혹은 숨음과 드러남을 통해 ‘은사’와 ‘일사’ 의 참다운 의미를 보여주었다.

영어초록

This paper examines the actual and ideal hermit life in the context of Overlooked Historical Records of the Three Korean Kingdoms. Thus far, based on the investigation of all the hermits mentioned in Overlooked Historical Records of the Three Korean Kingdoms (Vol. 5, Part 9, Article 138), we examined the hermit life and the meaning thereof in the “Life in Seclusion” and other sections of the book. The book suggests that the true meaning of withdrawing and advancing, or hiding and appearing, is in our lives and points to where that meaning should be realized.
Until now, people have differently perceived the stage of “going into government service” and “entering priesthood.” However, in the realms of withdrawal and advancement, hiding and appearing, worldly life and “life in seclusion” do not differ, because they focus on their own ways of life. That is, worldly government officials are obligated to live a life dedicated to serving and being loyal to the king; and priests are obligated to live a meditative life centered on principles transcending worldly concerns. We live painful daily lives ― a life of dissatisfaction ―, resulting from ignorance of the truth of the Middle Way, and the “knowledge of instability” resulting from ignorance of the truth of dependent origination.
How can we escape from this life of dissatisfaction and the knowledge of instability? The Buddha opened the way for knowledge of existential stability and life of satisfaction through an understanding of the Four Noble Paths and the practice of the Eightfold Path.
The path to liberation (解脫) from the bondage of suffering and the path to eternal freedom and unobstructed nirvana (涅槃) are interconnected; liberation frees our knowledge, and nirvana liberates our lives. The lives of hermits in Overlooked Historical Records of the Three Korean Kingdoms consistently guides professional workers and hermits who are overly obsessed with their names and illusions.
According to hermits, one can attain the knowledge necessary for liberation and nirvana only by abandoning one's name. Liberation and nirvana are linked to freedom. Thus, the knowledge necessary for liberation and a life of nirvana can be communicated.
What Ilyeon wanted to show in the various chapters of Overlooked Historical Records of the Three Korean Kingdoms are the communication between the “life of Middle Way compassion” and the “wisdom of dependent origination.” The appearance of intellectuals during the wartime of the late Goryeo period did not meet Ilyeon's expectations. Therefore, he portrayed the high priests, or great masters, who demonstrated intelligent life in the history of the ancient Four Kingdoms in three ways: life as a hermit, life as awakened people, and life as a national adviser or a King's teacher. The lives of these intelligent people are well captured in a passage from the Commentary to the Summary of the Great Vehicle : “Trans-mundane rules are the way to heal worldly rules, and trans-trans-mundane rules are the way to cure trans-mundane rules.” Withdrawing and advancing allows us to see that the healing of trans-mundane rules and the healing of trans-trans-mundane rules, that is, worldly rules, are different expressions of the compassionate acts of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas.
The orientations and tastes of a person as an individual and as a public figure differ. However, these orientations and tastes are likely to converge given a national crisis, with the common goal of surviving a war.
To survive, and to ensure an intellectual life based on history, one must cultivate the power of Dharma in normal times. The power of Dharma is the power of wisdom gained through the practice of truth.
A high priest, or a great master, is a being who has learned the power of Dharma through such practice of truth. We examined the intelligent beings that have acquired the power of Dharma through confidence in the truth and demonstrated that power in Overlooked Historical Records of the Three Korean Kingdoms.
