취향의 공동체와 소녀들의 멜로드라마—잡지 <여학생> 소설 연구 (The Community of Taste and Girl's Melodrama—A Study on the Novel in Girl Student (Ryeohakseng))

초록

이 논문은 1960∼70년대 문학-교양의 세대적, 젠더적 특징이 교차하는, 잡지 <여학생> 문학란에 수록된 연재소설과 단편소설을 본격적으로 분석하였다. 1960년대 중반 (청)소녀들의 공통 관심사와 감수성을 추출하고, 궁극적으로는 이들의 집단적 정체성이 구성되는 과정을 의미화하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 본론에서는 소설의 특성을 젠더화된 ‘취향의 공동체’와 ‘소녀들의 건전한 멜로드라마’로 규정하였다.
‘취향의 공동체-세계명작, 대중문화, 그리고 소녀클럽’에서는 여학생들이 영화와 팝송 같은 대중문화부터 서양명작소설과 클래식 음악에 이르기까지, 순수한 연애 감정부터 실존적 고민까지 공통의 취향과 감수성을 전유하였고, ‘소녀클럽’을 통해 제도가 요구하는 건전성을 실천하거나 또래문화를 향유한 점에 주목했다.
‘소녀들의 ‘건전한’ 멜로드라마-순수한 사랑과 우정’에서는 결함이 있는 가족으로부터 벗어나고자 하던 소녀들이 극적인 사건을 계기로 깨달음을 얻고, 사춘기의 열병을 극복한 후, 학생이자 가족구성원으로 되돌아오는 ‘건전한’ 결말로 끝나는 것이 서사의 공통적 특징이라고 보았다. 다른 축에는 출생의 비밀, 가족이나 형제자매의 학대, 우연한 만남이나 사고, 낭만적 연애, 금지된 사랑 같은 극적이고 감정 과잉을 유도하는 멜로드라마적 요소가 있다. 대중성과 계몽성이 결합된 ‘건전한’ 멜로드라마의 속성을 띠는 것이다.
<여학생> 독자들은 소설을 통해 또래집단의 일상문화와 교양을 습득하고, 남녀 간의 애정이나 열정, 질투와 선망을 뛰어넘는 우정과 연대의 중요성을 자연스럽게 습득함으로써 감정의 공동체를 형성할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 <여학생>은 (청)소녀들에게 필요한 교육 내지 규범을 소설이라는 완곡한 장치를 거쳐 재생산하는 역할을 했다. 이것은 다른 여성지나 젠더적 성격이 희미한 청소년 잡지와 차별적인 <여학생>지의 고유한 성격이라 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

This thesis analyzed the serial novels and short stories in the magazine Girl Student, which crossed the generational and gender characteristics of literature-culture in the 1960s~1970s. The purpose was to extract the common interests and sensibilities of girls and to ultimately signify their collective identity of the middle of the 1960's. In this paper, the characteristics of novels are defined as gendered 'community of taste' and 'girl's pure melodrama'.
In 'community of taste-western classical literature, popular culture, and girl's club', I noticed that the girls have appropriated common tastes and sensibilities from popular culture such as that ranging from movies and popular songs to western classical novels and music, from pure romantic feelings to existential anguish. They practiced the required moral soundness but also enjoyed their peer group's culture.
In 'girl's 'pure' melodrama-pure love and friendship', I saw that the novels ended well that the girls who wanted to escape from their defective family, became enlightened by dramatic events, overcame puberty, and returned to the institution of school and family. On the other hand, there was a melodramatic element that induced dramatic and emotional excess such as the secret of birth, the abuse of family or siblings, accidental encounters or accidents, romantic love, or forbidden love. That is, it had the characteristics of 'pure' melodrama that combined popularity and enlightenment.
The readers of Girl Student could acquire the daily cultures and the cultures of their peer group, the importance of friendship and solidarity beyond love and passion, jealousy and envy between men and women. So they could form a community of emotions. In conclusion, Girl Student reproduced the education and norms for the teenage women through the euphemistic device of the novel. This can be evaluated as the unique characteristic of Girl Student, which is different from other women's magazines or gender-neutral magazines for teenagers.
