인민 ‘여’배우의 탄생 - 해방-전쟁기 문예봉의 활동에 대한 소고 (The Birth of the People's Actress - A Review of Mun Ye-bong's Activities in the Liberation War Period)

본고는 일제 말기 선전영화의 ‘꽃’이었던 문예봉이 월북 이후 최초의 ‘인민배우’로 안착하기까지의 과정을 조명할 것이다. 구체적으로 북한 최초의 예술영화인 「내 고향」(1949)을 비롯해 「용광로」(1950), 「소년 빨치산」(1952) 등의 출연작을 분석하며, 부정해야 했던 일제 말기 선전영화 속 문예봉의 이미지가 해방 후 어떻게 반복, 변주되고 있는지를 논의한다. 문예봉은 월북 이후 매체 기고를 통해 북로당의 입장을 적극 강변하면서 강도 높은 사상성을 피력하는 동시에, 스크린 위에서는 과거와 마찬가지로 인고하는 병사의 연인이나 헌신적인 어머니 역할을 맡으며 기존의 스타 이미지를 이어간다. 이 과정에서 조선인 지원병 대신 인민 혁명군의 연인으로, 황국신민을 꿈꾸는 소년 대신 빨치산 소년의 어머니로 등장하며 과거의 이미지를 변주해 갔다. 그런데 북한 체제는 영화 속 문예봉의 연기와 관련해 신파성의 탈피, 해방 후 현실 생활의 체험, 정치성과 예술성의 조화 같은 이전과는 다른 역할의 형상화를 요구했다. 문예봉은 김일성 등이 내린 평가를 즉각적으로 수렴하는 동시에 적극적인 자아비판을 시작했고, 이어 사회주의체제하 인민의 생활과 인물의 형상을 연구하는 데 몰입했다. 이처럼 문예봉은 식민지시기 조선적 조강지처를 형상화하는 과정에서 얻었던 현모양처 이미지를 지켜가는 동시에, 사회주의 체제하의 급변하는 요구를 의식하고 부응해가는 과정에서 비로소 친일의 과거를 탈각하고 인민배우로 자리매김할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper sheds light on the process leading up to the safe arrival of Mun Ye-bong, a “flower” of Japanese propaganda films during the latter colonial period to, the “people’s actress” after defecting to North Korea. Specifically, three films in which she appeared are analyzed – My Home Village (Nae kohyang, 1949), Blast Furnace (Yonggwangno, 1950), and Boy Partisan (Sonyŏn ppalch'isan, 1952) – the first of which was North Korea’s first art film. The paper discusses how Mun’s image in Japanese propaganda films was necessarily denied by her North Korean handlers, and how that image was then repeated and varied following the Liberation. Once she defected to the North, Mun actively advocated the Bukrodang (北勞黨) ideology with energy and sophistication via a media columnist. At the same time, she continued to cultivate the same star image that she had portrayed in the Colonial Period, either as the lead romantic interest for a stoic soldier or as a devotional mother figure. Thus, rather than playing the romantic interest for a Korean collaborator, she began playing the romantic interest for a member of the People’s Revolutionary Army. Likewise, when she played a motherly role, the son who dreamed of being a loyal subject of Japan (皇國臣民) was swapped out for a boy partisan. Of note, the North Korean regime demanded that Mun take on different roles than those she had depicted under Japanese rule. Her new handlers wanted her to bring modern experiences to the screen, including the escape from Shinpaseong (新派性), experiences reflecting life after the Liberation, and the harmony between politics and artistic values.
Mun began to engage in positive self-criticism while receiving evaluations from Kim Il-sung, and she embarked on a process of inquiring into people’s lives and developing characters that reflected socialist life. Thus, while Mun had originally cultivated the image of a good wife and wise mother of the Colonial Period, particularly in the sense of embodying traditional Korean values, she was subsequently able to emerge as the people’s actress in North Korea, successfully ridding herself of her pro-Japanese past by embracing the rapidly-changing demands of socialist life.
