유럽중심주의 비판: 동서문화의 동등한 만남을 위하여 (Criticism of Eurocentrism : A Necessary Condition for the Equality of the East and West Cultures)

초록

이 글은 문화들의 동등한 만남의 필수적인 조건으로서 유럽중심주의 비판의 문제를 상호문화철학(Interkulturelle-Philosophie)의 관점에서 다룬다. 중심주의 문제가 서세동점의 근대 이후 서구의 비유럽/동양에 대한 폭력적이고 일방향적인 만남의 결과라고 한다면, 중심주의 비판의 핵심은 유럽중심주의에 있게 되고, 그런 한에서 유럽중심주의 비판은 동서문화의 동등한 만남의 조건으로서 선취되어야 할 과제가 되기 때문이다.
논의는 중심주의 비판을 다루기 이전에 문명과 문화 개념, 그리고 상호문화성에 대해서 살펴 본 다음, 빔머(Franz Martin Wimmer)의 중심주의 비판과 그 의미에 대한 논의의 순서로 전개될 것이다. 문명과 문화 개념을 통해서, 상호문화철학의 문화 개념을 분명히 하고, 유럽중심주의는 문명의 개념을 기준으로 해서 유럽과 비유럽/동양을 문명과 야만의 도식으로 가르고, 유럽의 식민지 정복을 정당화한 결과의 측면이라는 점을 확인할 것이다.
빔머의 중심주의 비판은 팽창중심주의(Expansiven Zentrismus), 통합중심주의(Integrative Zentrismus), 다원적 중심주의(Multiplen Zentrismus) 혹은 분리중심주의(Separativen Zentrismus), 잠정적 중심주의(Tentativer Zentrismus)의 네 유형으로 구분된다. 이 중에서 팽창중심주의와 통합중심주의의 두 유형은 근대의 식민지 팽창주의 시대의 전형적인 유럽중심주의적 유형, 다원적/분리 중심주의는 비유럽/동양의 탈식민화의 민족주의 운동의 발생과 맥을 같이 하는 포스트모더니즘적인 상대주의적 유형이다. 이들 세 유형에 대한 비판은 ‘동등성’이라는 대화의 객관적인 조건을 마련하도록 하는 반면, 마지만 잠정적 중심주의에 대한 비판은 주체 자신에 대한 비판으로서, 주체의 개방성을 가능하게 한다. 문화들의 만남에서 개방성의 주체만이 타자를 수용하거나 자신의 것을 포기할 수 있도록 하며, 그 때문에 잠정적 중심주의 비판은 상호문화성의 조건으로서 빔머의 중심주의 비판의 성격을 잘 드러내고 있다. 그리하여 그의 중심주의 비판은 동등성과 개방성이라는 문화들의 만남의 두 가지 조건에 대한 성찰로 이끈다.

영어초록

This article deals with the problems of Eurocentrism through the perspective of intercultural-philosophy for the equality of the East and West cultures. If the centrism is the result of a violent and one-way relationship between Europe and non-Europe/East, the discourse should focus on Eurocentrism, and criticism of Eurocentrism should be a necessary condition for the equality of the East and West cultures.
First, I will examine the concept for civilization, culture, and interculturality. And then I will discuss the criticism of centrism of Franz Martin Wimmer. I will clarify the concept of interculturality through the various concepts of culture and civilization. Europeans distinguished European civilization from the oriental barbarism based on the concept of civilization which has been used as a tool to justify Europeans’ colonial conquests.
Franz Martin Wimmer‘s criticism of Eurocentrism contains four centrism: the expansionary centrism, integrated centrism, pluralistic or separate centrism, and tentative centrism. Among these, the expansionary and integrated centrism are the two typical types of Eurocentrism in the modern colonial era. Multilateral or separate centrism came from the relativism of postmodernism which was concurrent with decolonization movements of the Non-European/East historically.
Wimmer’s three types of criticism, (criticism on the expansionary, integrated, and pluralistic/separate centrism) are the key criticism of Eurocentrism, and they lead to the 'equality' of cultures and offer conditions for bilateral dialogue. Of the four types, the criticism of the tentative centrism is about the critique of the subject itself. The criticism of the tentative centrism is meaningful because it deals with the subject’s openness which enables inter-cultural relationships. The subject can accept the other’s culture and can give up or change his/her own only through the subject’s openness. The criticism of the tentative centrism reveals the characteristic of Wimmer’s criticism effectively. Thus we can reflect on the two conditions, 'equality' and subject’s openness, which lead to the equality of different cultures.
