초록

This study explores Toni Morrison’s cultural variant perspectives of Lula Ann Bride’s black femininity in God Help the Child. This study shows that Morrison’s perspectives on black femininity aren’t different from those of the cultural variance that regards African Americans’ culture as a constant pattern remembered and practiced from its origin. In the novel, Bride, from birth, was rejected and ostracized by her parents and community because of her Sudanese skin color. Therefore, even though she grows to be a successful executive at a cosmetics company, she doesn’t run away from the traumatic experiences that she internalized in childhood. However, Morrison juxtaposes the restoration process of Bride’s femininity with her journey in the plot. During the journey to the woods of northern California, Bride reflects on herself and heals herself through meeting with the hippie couple who are directed against the values of the post-industrial society, and Rain, a young girl who has known her own brand of torment. Finally, with the disclosure of Bride’s delivery and marriage, Morrison shows that Bride is turned into a self-willful, –determined and –active woman or mother who encompasses African American women’s traditional and contemporary womanhood together.
