일제 강점기 상해 재유동포 영화 연구 -<상해여, 잘 있거라!>(再會吧,上海)를 중심으로- (A Study on Movies of Korean Residents in Shanghai during the Japanese Colonial Period - Focusing on Good Bye, Shanghai!)

초록

이 논문은 상해 재유동포 영화 중 현전하는 정기탁 감독의 <상해여, 잘 있거라!>를 중심과 주변부의 충돌, 상해의 모던 이미지. 그리고 근대적 영상기법을 중심으로 고찰해 보았다. 이를 통해 1930년대 상해인들의 고민이 모던과 근대로 상징되는 서구 문명으로 인해 상처받고 자신들의 정체성에 대한 혼란을 겪게 되었던 일제 강점기 한국인과 별반 다르지 않음을 밝혀보고자 하였다.
<상해여, 잘 있거라!>의 여주인공 바이루와 남주인공 의사 리우광후이의 만남은 주변부 이민자와 중심부 상해의 충돌을 상징적으로 보여주는 사건이다. 이들의 만남은 정식 결혼으로 이어지지 못하고 사생아를 낳는 비극적인 결과를 만들어낸다. 결국 아이의 죽음으로 상해의 주변부 이민자를 대표하는 상징적 인물 바이루는 상해를 떠나 자신이 살던 주변부 공간으로 회귀한다. 주인공이 가지고 있는 문제를 해결할 수 있는 공간은 모던과 근대로 상징되는 상해라는 중심공간이 아니었기 때문이다.
<상해여, 잘 있거라!>에서 댄스홀만큼이나 모던 이미지를 대표적으로 보여주고 있는 공간이 바로 서양식 병원이다. 그러나 댄스걸이 되어 자신을 상해와 어울리는 모던 이미지로 가장한 여주인공 바이루나 모던한 직업을 대표하는 서양의사 리우광후이 역시 진정한 의미로서의 모던한 인물은 아니다. 이처럼 표피적 모던 이미지로 가장된 남녀 주인공들은 상해의 모던 이미지를 상징하는 화려한 야경과 절묘하게 매치된다. 남녀 주인공의 모던 이미지 이면에 어두움이 존재하듯 야경이 화려한 이유는 화려한 불빛을 받쳐주는 어둠이 존재하기 때문이다.
<상해여, 잘 있거라!>에서 정기탁 감독은 다양한 방식의 근대적 영상기법과 편집술을 선보인다. 이는 1930년대 한국에 비해 자본과 기술력이 월등했던 당시 상해라는 특정 공간 하에서 가능했던 작업이다. 이런 이유로 정기탁은 상해를 떠나 한국으로 귀국하면서 그의 영화 속 메시지와는 다른 현실에 직면하게 된다. 영화인 정기탁에게 한국이라는 공간은 상해라는 공간과 달리 그의 재능과 능력에 맞는 영화적 환경과 자본을 제공해 줄 수 없었기 때문이다.

영어초록

This study explored among the films of Korean resident movie men in Shanghai, director Jeong Gi Tak’s ‘Good Bye, Shanghai!’ focusing on conflicts between its center and circumference, modern images in Shanghai and modern picture techniques. Through this, this study intended to identify the situation of Joseon residents there thatwas not different from that of people in Shanghai in 1930s got hurt with agonies due to western civilization that symbolized the modern times and suffered from confusion of their identities.
The encounter of Bailu the heroine of ‘Good Bye, Shanghai!’and Liukwanghui the hero doctor of the movie was the event that symbolically showed conflicts between immigrant residents of the circumference and residents of the center in Shanghai. Their meeting failed to succeed in marriage but brought about a tragic consequence with giving birth to an illegitimate child. Eventually the death of the child caused Bailu who stood for a representative immigrant in the circumference of Shanghai to leave there to return to a space of the circumferencethat she used to reside. The space coping with the matters that the heroine had was not the center space of Shanghai that symbolized the modern times.
It was the western style hospital that showed modern images as representative as the dance hall in ‘Good Bye, Shanghai!’ did. However, either Bailu the heroine who disguised herself with a modern image as a dance girl that thatcame along with the image of Shanghai or Liukwanghui a western doctor representing a modern job were not modern people. Like this, the heroine and hero who disguised themselves with epidermal modern images exquisitely matched the gay night view symbolizing the modern images of Shanghai. As the darkness existed behind their modern images, the reason that the night view was splendidwas that there was darkness which suspended the splendid lights.
In ‘Good Bye, Shanghai!’ director Jeong Gi Tak introduced various types of picture techniques and editing tactics. It was only possible for him to do so in Shanghai that was under a specific space with outstandingcapital and technologies comparing those of Joseon. Owing to these reasons, when he left Shanghai to return to Joseon, he got confronted with the reality different from that of the messages in his movie. To a movie man Jeong Gi Tak, the space Joseon was not capable of providing him with cinematic environment and capital fit for his talent and competence contrary to Shanghai.
