초록

이 글은 17세기부터 19세기 말까지, 조선시대 문인이 작성한 ‘생애성찰적 글쓰기’ 양식을 대상으로, 여종과 유모가 문자적으로 재현되는 경위, 양상, 관점에 대한 이해를 고려하여, 이들을 둘러싼 일상, 노동, 관계의 역학을 성찰적으로 분석했다.
조선후기 문헌 기록에서 여종과 유모는 사대부가 여성의 부수적 존재로 기록되었지만, 이들에 대한 단독적 기록이 27편이 있음을 확인했다. 조선시대의 여종은 명백히 상층 가족과 밀착된 가계 공동체의 일원이었으며, 이들은 상층의 문화와 교양, 품성과 자질, 도덕과 예절, 소양과 태도, 경험과 감각을 일상, 청각, 구술적 경로로 경험하며 배울 수 있었고, 이를 내면화했다. 여종은 단지 환치 가능한 노동의 매개나 도구적 존재로서 살아간 것이 아니라 사대부의 가족 구성원의 정서적 지지자이자 감성 돌봄의 역할을 했고, 유사-가족, 또는 사실상의 벗이 되는 등, 친밀한 관계를 형성하기도 했다. 사대부가 여성은 여종을 관리하는데서 나아가 교육했으며, 여종의 모범으로 간주된 경우도 많았다.
여종을 ‘도둑’으로 의심하는 등 사대부의 인식은 부정적인 경우도 있지만, 이들의 능력과 성품을 인정하며 평생토록 공감적, 대화적, 인격적 관계를 맺었던 경우도 확인된다. 또한 여종은 일방적으로 사대부의 평가와 명령을 듣는 복종적이고 수동적 존재였던 것만이 아니라, 상전을 평가하고 판단하는 주체였으며, 그들의 삶을 증언하고 기억하는 역사화의 주체였음을 해명했다.
유모는 양육 행위를 통해 대상자의 인격, 품성, 정서적 차원에서 영향을 미치고 감성을 볼보는 적극적인 삶의 동반자였으며, 사대부 문인은 이들을 기념하고 애도하는 글쓰기를 통해 이들에 대한 감사와 그들로부터의 영향을 인정하는 문화를 생성했다.

영어초록

Based on the understanding of how maids and nannies are literally represented, this article examines the ‘life-reflecting essays’ written by the elite literatis of the Chosǒn period from the 17th to the late 19th century, this paper reflexively analyzed the dynamics of the everyday life, labor and relationship between noble class and maid/nanny.
During the late Chosǒn dynasty, the records about the maidservant and nanny were written twenty-seven single texts. The maid of the Chosǒn Dynasty was clearly a member of the community closely related to the upper-class family. They were able to experience and learn from upper class and their culture, character, qualities, morality, manners, potentiality, attitude, experience and sense in everyday life in auditory way and oral pathways, and internalized them. The maids did not only serve as a mediator or instrumental being of a workable worker but also served as an affective supporter and emotional care for the family members of the noble class and formed an intimate relationship such as quasi-family, de facto friends. Women were educated further in the management of slave women, and there were many cases in which they were regarded as a model for maidservants.
Among the maidens, there were regarded as ‘thieves’ negatively by the noble class. On the other hand, it is also a case of recognizing the power and character of a maidservant and establishing emotional, communicative, and personal relationships throughout life. The maidservant was not merely a submissive and passive being who unilaterally listened to the aristocrat and submit their orders. The maidservant was the subject of evaluating and judging the masters and was the subject of historicalization to testify and remember their lives.
The nanny was regarded as the woman who nursing a aristocratic baby, but this was a result of the combination of the epochal grammar and gendered perspective which was separated from the maternal role to the body. The nurse influenced personality, and emotional dimension to the subject through nurturing behavior, and have a relation with them as an active life partner. The elite literati created a culture that acknowledged their appreciation and influence from the nannies by writing and commemorating the life of them.
