초록

본 논문의 목적은 진실의 차원에서 <히든>을 분석하기 위한 것으로 조르쥬와 마지드의 개인적 진실과 감독의 영화적 진실에 초점을 맞추었다. 조르쥬는 의식 적으로는 자신이 아무 잘못이 없다고 부인하지만 무의식적으로는 죄책감을 느낀 다. 그래서 아내에게 마지드의 존재를 숨기고, 마지드가 자살한 후에야 비로소 어린 시절에 있었던 일을 아내에게 말한다. 그때도 돌팔이 의사, 멍청한 닭, 마지드 의 탓을 대며 자신을 방어한다. 조르쥬가 죄책감을 느끼고 있다는 결정적인 증거 는 어린 시절의 마지드로 추정되는 소년의 시선을 두려워하는 것이다. 입에 피를 흘리는 아이의 ‘시선’을 대면할 때 조르쥬는 깜짝 놀라고 두려워한다. 그 시선 때 문에 악몽을 꾸고 잠에서 깨어난다. ‘섬뜩함’, ‘끔찍함’, ‘철렁함’은 바로 진실이 나타나는 모습이다. 조르쥬는 자신이 거짓말을 했다는 것 때문에 괴로워하는 것 이 아니라 죄책감 때문에 괴로워한다. 조르쥬의 진실은 죄책감이다. 마지드는 조 르쥬에대한엄청난분노와증오때문에자살한다. 그는조르쥬를불러그의눈 앞에서 자신이 어릴 때 칼로 살아있는 닭의 목을 내리쳐 죽이는 것과 똑같은 방 식으로 칼로 자신의 목을 그어 자살한다. 자신이 죽인 닭과 자신을 동일시하는 것이다. 동시에그는조르쥬의목을따고싶은데그렇게할수없으니까조르쥬 와동일시하여자기목을따는것이다. 혹은어린마지드가도끼로닭의목을칠 때 그는 닭과 조르쥬를 동일시하여 조르쥬의 목을 치는 마음으로 닭의 목을 쳤을 가능성도 있다. 마지드는 닭과 동일시되고, 죽이고 싶은 조르쥬와 동일시되어 자 살한다. 닭=마지드=조르쥬가 된다. 마지드는 자기를 죽임으로써 조르쥬를 죽이는 것이다. 그래서일부러조르쥬를오게해서바로그앞에서칼로자기목을그어 자살하는 것이다. 마지드의 진실은 조르쥬를 죽이고 싶도록 미워하는 분노다.
<히든>에서 모든 이야기는 비디오테이프를 중심으로 전개된다. 비디오테이프 는 숨은(히든) 시선이 있다는 것을 보여준다. 영화에서 등장하는 비디오테이프를 통해우리는감독이모든것을조작하고있다는증거를발견하게된다. 모든비 디오테이프의 촬영 위치는 영화를 찍은 위치와 동일하고 때로는 편집되어 배달 된다. 조르쥬의 친구인 피에르와 조르쥬의 부인인 안나가 만나는데 뒤에서 대머 리남자가힐끗힐끗그들을보고있다. 안나의외도를보고있는것은미지의인 물인데 그 사실을 알고 따지는 것은 조르쥬와 안나의 아들인 피에로다. 피에로가 다니는 학교로 배달된 엽서는 누가 진실을 조작하는가를 보여주는 중요한 단서가 된다. 엽서에는 수신자가 피에로이고 ‘그의 아빠가 시켜서 피에로를 위해’라고 적혀있다. 현실에서 피에로 아버지인 조르쥬가 그런 엽서를 보낼 리는 없기 때문 에여기서말하는그의아빠는가상의진실된아빠다. 진실을안다고가정된주 체가 보낸 것이다. 마지막 장면에서도 피에로가 다니는 학교 앞에서 조르주의 아 들인 피에로와 마지드의 아들이 만나 대화를 나눈다. 대화 내용이 알려지지 않고 전적으로 보여주기만 하기 때문에 여러 가지 추측을 불러일으킨다. 이런 식으로 <히든>에서는 감독만이 모든 것을 알고 있고 모든 것을 보고 있다. 감독의 편집과 카메라에 의해서 모든 것이 조작된다. 이것이 <히든>의 영화적 진실이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the film ‘Hidden’ in the light of truth, focusing on the personal truths of Georges and Majid and the movie director’s cinematic truth.
Georges feels unconsciously guilty, although he pretends that he has done nothing wrong on a conscious level. He hides Majid’s presence from his wife and tells his wife what happened in his childhood only after Majid committed suicide. Even then, he defends himself by blaming a quack doctor, a stupid chicken and Majid. The crucial evidence that Georges feels guilty is he fears the gaze of a boy who is presumed to be Majid in his childhood. Georges is astonished and frightened when he faces the ‘gaze’ of the boy bleeding in his mouth. He suffers from nightmares and wakes from sleep because of the gaze. ‘Uncanny’, ‘horrible’ and ‘heart-sinking’ are the very appearance of truth. When the truth appears, it comes in the form of ‘scary’, ‘horrible’, and ‘heart-sinking.’ What bothers Georges is not the fact that he lied, but the guilt. Georges’ truth is the feeling of guilt. Majid kills himself because of a tremendous fury and hatred for Georges. He asks Georges to come to his house and cuts his neck with a knife in front of Georges’ eyes. In fact, the way he commits suicide is the same with the way that he killed a chicken when he was a child. He killed a live chicken by hitting it with an axe at that time. In other words, he identifies himself with the chicken he killed. It can also be said that he cut his own neck, identifying himself with Georges. It’s because he wanted to cut Georges’ neck but he couldn’t. It is highly likely that young Majid hit the neck of a chicken with an axe, as if hitting Georges in the neck. That is, he equates the chicken with Georges. Majid kills himself, being identified with the chicken and with Georges whom he wants to kill. The chicken equals Georges and Georges equals Majid. In other words, Majid kills Georges by killing himself. Majid’s truth is anger at Georges.
In “Hidden”, all the stories unfold around videotapes, showing that there is a hidden gaze. It is through the videotapes that the audience can find evidence that the movie director is manipulating everything. The location of where all videotapes are taken is coincides with the position of where the film was shot. In addition, the videotapes are often delivered in edited form. The same goes for the scene in which Pierre, Georges’ friend, meets Georges’ wife, Anna. There is a bald man glancing at them from behind. It is unknown person who witnesses Anna’s extramarital affairs, and it is Pierre, the son of Anna and Georges, who is questioning her about it. The postcard delivered to Pierre’s school is a crucial clue, showing who manipulates truth in the film. The recipient column of it reads ‘Pierre’ and the sender column reads ‘For Pierre, because your father had me do it’. In reality, Georges, who is Pierre’s father would have never sent such a postcard. Therefore, what ‘his father’ means here is a fictional ‘true father’. It was sent by a subject assumed to know the truth. In the last scene, Pierre, Georges’ son, meets Majid’s son in front of the school that Pierre attends. The scene is seen from afar. It raises various speculations because the audience does not know what they are talking about. Only the director can see everything and knows everything in the film ‘Hidden’. Everything is manipulated by filming and editing by the director. This is the cinematic truth of the film ‘Hidden’.
