현대 중국의 정체성과 미술: 수이지엔궈의 <의문 연구>를 통해 본 탈식민주의적 접근법 (Modern Chinese Identity and Art : the postcolonial approach in the Vein Study by Sui Jianguo)

초록

본 연구의 주제는 중국 미술가 수이지엔궈 (隋建國, 1956-)의 조각 연작 <의문 연구 (衣纹硏究)>(1995-2001제작)에 나타난 현대 중국의 정체성이다. 이를 통해서 연구자는 서구 문화의 영향 속에서 급격한 사회 변화를겪은 아시아 국가의 문화적 정체성을 탈식민주의적 관점에서 바라볼 수 있는 가능성을 밝히고자 하였다. 20세기 이래로 아시아에서는 정치, 사회, 문화계를 막론하고 식민주의를 극복하려는 많은 시도들이 있어 왔다. 그러나 이러한 시도들 중 상당수가 ‘아시아 대(對) 서구 유럽’라는 비교와 경쟁의 틀 안에서 아시아의 우월성을 입증하려는 배타적 민족주의적 성격을 띠었다. 이는 식민주의에 내재한 주체와 타자 간의 불평등한 관계를 재생산하는 한계를 가진다. 이에 본 연구에서는 1990년대 중국 사회에 초점을 맞추어 현재의 상황을 비판적으로 분석하고, 대안적인 문화 실천으로 조각가 수이지엔궈의 조형 작업물인 <의문 연구> 연작을 제시하고자 한다. 본론에서는 먼저 1990년대 중국의 학술·문예계에서 진행된 정체성 논의를 검토하였다. 그리고 당시의 정체성 논의와 연계되어 활황을 이루었던 탈식민주의 담론이 포스트모더니즘이나 민족주의 등과 뒤섞여 ‘자기타자화’의 경향을 내포하고 있었음을 알아보았다. 이어서 수이지엔궈의 연작 <의문 연구>에서 서구 유럽의 신고전주의 양식과 중국의 사회주의 리얼리즘 양식이 결합되는 방식을 분석하였다. 이를 통하여 수이지엔궈의 작품은 사회주의리얼리즘이 서구 유럽 미술의 영향 위에 형성되었다는 사실을 드러내고 있으며, 이를 통해서 통상적으로 중국사회 특유의 미술 양식으로 상찬되는 중국 사회주의 리얼리즘에 대한 일반적인 해석을 뒤집고 있음을 살펴보았다. 또한 이러한 작업 방식이 중국 사회주의를 탈신비화하고 중국의 자기 정체성을 새롭게 성찰할 뿐만 아니라나아가 서구 유럽 문화에 대해서도 재고할 필요성을 제시하고 있음을 고찰하였다. 이와 같은 해석에 기반하여결론에서는 수이지엔궈의 작업이 모더니티에 대한 보편적인 성찰을 보여주며 서구 유럽과 중국, 주체와 타자가서로를 비추는 구체적인 탈식민주의적 실천이라고 평가하였다. 배타적 민족주의에서 벗어나 문화 정체성을 정립하는 문제는 제국주의적 이데올로기를 극복하려는 세계 미술계의 과제이다. 이러한 점에서 수지엔궈의 작업은 중국이라는 특정 지역에 국한되지 않고 전지구적인 차원에서도 의미를 갖는다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This research focuses on the identity of modern China exposed in the sculpture series <VeinStudy (衣纹硏究)> of the Chinese artist Sui Jianguo (隋建國, 1956-). Through this study, theresearcher sought to disclose the possibility of observing the cultural identity of Asian countriesthat have underwent rapid social change under the influence of Western culture from apost-colonial point of view. Since the 20th century, there have been many attempts in Asia toovercome colonialism, regardless of politics, society, and culture. A considerable number ofattempts, however, took on a exclusive nationalist nature that attempts to vindicate thesuperiority of Asia within the framework of comparison and competition entitled ‘Asia versus (對)Western Europe.’ This embodies the limitation of the ability to reproduce the unequalrelationship between subjectivity and otherness inherent in colonialism. To this extent, thisresearch aims attention at the Chinese society in the 1990s in order to critically analyze thecurrent situation, as well as propose the series <Vein Study>, the sculptor Sui Jianguo’s work, asan alternative cultural practice. First, the paper discusses the debate on identity that hadproceeded in the academic and literary fields of China in the 1990s. Then, it sought to examinethat the post-colonialism discourse, which was a boom in connection with the debate of identityat that time, was mixed with post-modernism and nationalism and further entailed the tendencyof ‘self-tyranny.’ Furthermore, it analyzed the way in which the Neoclassical style of WesternEurope has combined with the socialist realism of China in Sui Jianguo’s series <Vein Study>.
Through this, it scrutinized that Sui Jianguo’s work reveals that socialist realism is formed on theinfluence of Western European art, and that it overturns the general interpretation of Chinesesocialist realism that is praised as the Chinese society’s unique art style. Moreover, the researchproved that this type of work style not only mystically exuviates China’s socialism and newlyreflects on the China’s own identity, but also imposes the necessity to reconsider WesternEuropean culture. Based on this interpretation, in the concluding part, it depicts Sui Jianguo’swork as a universal reflection on modernity, as well as appraises that it is a concretepost-colonial practice in which Western Europe and China, the subject and others, illuminateeach other. The problem of establishing cultural identity out of exclusive nationalism is a task ofthe world art to overcome imperialist ideology. In this sense, Sui Jianguo’s work can be reputedto be significant not only in a specific region of China but also on a global scale.
