허만 멜빌의 『엔칸타다스』에 나타난 노예제 비판 (Herman Melville’s Criticism of Slavery in the Encantadas)

초록

16세기 유럽인들에게 발견된 이후, 남미 에콰도르 근처의 태평양에 위치한 갈라파고스 제도는 신대륙의 탐험가나 항해자들, 과학자들에게 관심의 대상이었다. 특히 찰스 다윈이 섬에서의 관찰을 바탕으로 진화론을 전개한 것으로 잘 알려져 있지만, 작가 허만 멜빌에게 갈라파고스는 스페인어 이름인 ‘엔칸타다스,’ 즉 마법에 걸린 섬으로 기억된다. 당시 자신의 선원으로서의 여행 경험을 바탕으로 한 『타이피』와 『오무』의 작가로 알려져 있던 멜빌은 그의 중편 『엔칸타다스』에서 또 다른 여행기를 시도하였다. 하지만 단순히 이국적인 풍경과 동물, 사람들에 대한 이야기를 들려주는 대신 멜빌은 다윈 식의 과학담론에 대한 비판과 더불어 인간 문명과 제도에 대한 비판을 하고 있다.
이 논문은 『엔칸타다스』를 멜빌의 반노예제 담론으로 읽고자 한다. 멜빌의 노예제 비판은 크게 두 가지로 작품에 나타나는데, 하나는 록 로돈도의 동물을 통한 비판이다. 서식지에 따라 분류되는 새들은 인간사회의 계급을 풍자하며, 특히 백인이 다른 인종의 이민자들 위에 군림하던 19세기 중엽의 미국사회를 반영하고 있다. 멜빌의 노예제 비판은 섬의 거주자인 오벌루스를 통해 더 직접적으로 드러나는데, 엔칸타다스의 유일한 백인인 은둔자 오벌루스는 순진한 흑인 방문자들과 선원들을 꾀어 자신의 노예로 삼아버린다. 이 에피소드를 통하여 멜빌은 미국의 탄생과 유지에 중요한 역할을 했던 노예무역을 비판하며, 이런 제도가 계속되는 데 대한 우려를 표시한다.
『엔칸타다스』는 멜빌이 이전의 이국적 여행기의 형식을 유지하지만 그의 관심이 본국에서 일어나고 있는 사회문제 즉 노예제의 비판으로 옮겨가고 있음을 잘 보여준다. 『모비 딕』에서 다루었던 인종의 문제를 짧은 길이의 중편으로 간결하게, 그렇지만 더욱 진지하게 다루었다는 점에서 『엔칸타다스』는 멜빌의 작품 중에서 중요한 위치를 차지한다.

영어초록

Since its discovery by Europeans in the 16th century, the Galapagos Islands, located in the Pacific across Ecuador, South America, has been a site of interest to many people such as explorers, sailors, and scientists. Charles Darwin, who developed the theory of evolution based on his observation there, may be remembered as the most famous visitor to the islands. However, the Encantadas, another name for the Galapagos in Spanish meaning the enchanted islands, offered a unique setting to Herman Melville for his work. Melville, who was then known as the writer of Typee and Omoo based on his experience in the South Pacific, again utilizes the popular medium of a travel book in his novella the Encantadas and provides diverse sketches of geological features, animals, and people of the islands. However, his interest does not seem to follow the track of a scientist like Darwin. Rather he criticizes both the scientific discourse of the time and the human civilization and institutions in general, and more specifically, the slavery system in his country.
This article argues that the Encantadas can be read as an anti-slavery discourse. One way of Melville’s criticizing the slavery system is through the animal kingdom of the Encantadas. He shows that the birds of Rock Rodondo are classified by the height of the rock they inhabit, corresponding to their social status. This hierarchical order of birds reflects the mid-19th century America in which the white race dominated over immigrants of other races. The human visitors of the Encantadas are the other means of criticizing slavery. In this sense, the hermit Oberlus takes an important place in Melville’s criticism of the slavery. Oberlus is described as an ugly European who tricks innocent black people and sailors into becoming his slaves. Through the episode of Oberlus, Melville points out the slave trade carried out by the white people, which contributed to the foundation of a new country in the New World, and warns of the danger to the future of the United States of America.
Melville in the Encantadas retains the atmosphere of an exotic travelogue, but his emphasis shifts to a serious and sharp critique of the slavery existing in his country. In this sense, the Encantadas can be seen as a significant milestone in Melville’s writing career which epitomizes the racial issues he extensively delved in Moby-Dick.
