Recently, attempts have been made to discover women’s voices in Korean Church history, but the subjects are still limited. One of the ways to overcome the male-centered historical narratives is to discover the hidden stories of women. This article elaborates the process of establishing the National Organization of the Korean Presbyterian Women (NKPW) to reveal and embrace history of women in the Korean Church.
To achieve this purpose, this paper traces three stages of the formation of Presbyterian women groups: the local church level, the regional level, and the national level. It initially shows how female foreign missionaries conducted ministries and mission works for women in Korean society. It then explores how the first Presbyterian women’s group on a local church level, a regional level and a national level. Both on the local church level and regional level, women’s groups were influenced by the Nevius Methods and the Division Agreement.
The characteristic of the NKPW was formed through the interaction with the General Assembly (GA) during its founding process. As the NKPW became an affiliate of the GA, it could not effectively make women’s voices and was satisfied to support missions as a subsidiary body of the GA led by male clergy. This affected the route of NKPW in the future. Tracing this history can help determine the agenda and voices of women in the Korean Church in the future.
