A Study on the Tea Culture Places and Tea Gardens of Korea

초록

Despite the relatively large amount of tea culture related data in Korea, there are few tea culture spaces existing in comparison with China or Japan due to the characteristics of nature-friendly tea culture in Korea. Based on the previous point, this study investigates the location, space, and facility characteristics of Korean tea culture and representative tea that can represent tea culture space.
As tea places and tea gardens of Korea indicate, traditional tea culture places are very diverse and variable depending on the places’user and spatial characteristics based on dominant thoughts, such as Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. In addition, Korean tea gardens have strong characteristic with open structure to naturally connect gardens and nature.
The representative examples of Korean tea gardens referenced in this article—Dongcheonsuksil Garden, Baegundong Garden, Dasanchodang Garden, Iljiam Hermitage, and Hwallaejung Pavilion—were all created in the Joseon Dynasty. Tea gardens, such as pavilions and forests were mainly located in mountain valleys in order to take advantages of beautiful scenic views and high-quality water. Additionally, the positionning of tea gardens was closely related to the location of Camellia sinensis habitats especially in Jeollanam-do.
Tea culture places were for monks, classical scholars, writers and noblemen. Thus, the places commonly hosted literary activities, including poetry, caligraphy, and drawings; and activities, such as moral training, relaxation, and seclusion. Tea gardens belonging to temples were different from Japanese tea houses and gardens: there were no designated places for drinking tea, and outdoor tea places where one could commune with nature when drinking tea using simple tea things were preferred. Noblemen of the Joseon Dynasty did not make specific places for a tea life; instead, they naturally connected their tea life places with forests, yards, houses, and tea pavilions. When drinking tea, noblemen loved and enjoyed the arts in nature, and expanded their world of art. This might be mainly influenced by Taoism ideas.
Korean tea gardens are non-standardized and nature itself balances their freedom and autonomy. This characteristic of Korean tea gardens is based on the Korean people’s a intrinsic view of nature.
