초록

Sports have always been an alternative to other undertakings such as education and career development in Singapore. It takes years of hard work and thousands of hours to be top-notch and with the lack of support and commitment from the society to pursue sports professionally, importing foreign-born athletes becomes a quick solution to inserting Singapore on the map in winning medals. However, there seems to be an endless debate over the use of foreign-born athletes in Singapore, the purpose and effectiveness of these foreign-born athletes and the disputes between winning the medal and the pride behind the win. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the inconsistencies of importing foreign-born, specifically in the Singapore Women’s basketball sporting scene. Literature reviews and content analysis was used in this study and the data collected from the various sources undergoes a computational process to allow the concepts and themes to emerge from the data. Results shows that there seems to be a brawl with the foreign sports talent scheme over the years, highlighting the overemphasis in the need of foreign-born athletes and the loopholes and failures in acquisition. This study concluded that the path to championship is more than just producing medal-winning athletes, it is the construction of a nation that lives and breathes sports so that the identification of the sporting talent comes more easily, the culture that encourages sports is the key for sustainability.
