이극로의 대종교 활동과 「한얼노래」 연구 (The Study on Daejonggyo activity and 『Haneollorae(한얼노래)』 of Lee Geuk-ro)

초록

이극로(李克魯, 1893-1978)는 나라사랑과 한글사랑을 실천했던 독립운동가이자 한글학자였다. 그는 일제강점기와 광복기를 거치면서 겨레를 지키는 일에 헌신했으며, 굳은 신념으로 한글 연구와 보급에 앞장섰다. 또한 그는 문학 분야, 종교 분야에 관련해서도 간과할 수 없는 활동을 보여주었다. 특히 이극로의 삶에 있어 대종교는 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 그의 다양한 저술 가운데 대종교와 관련된 글들이 많아 눈길을 끈다.
이 글은 1942년 6월에 펴낸 『한얼노래』의 의미와 특성을 살피는 데 목표를 두었다. 이를 위해 글쓴이는 이극로의 대종교 활동과 더불어 『한얼노래』를 대상으로 창작 배경과 구성에 대해 짚어보고, 그 유형과 특성을 신앙·수양·예식의 측면에서 꼼꼼하게 따져보았다.
일제강점기 이극로의 한글 연구와 조선어학회 활동, 그리고 그것을 통한 항일운동의 배경에는 대종교 신앙이라는 정신적 가치가 굳게 자리잡고 있었다. 다시 말해서 이극로의 나라사랑 정신과 우리말과 글에 대한 애착, 그리고 우리 민족의 이상 실현을 위한 포부는 대종교와의 인연에서 비롯된다고 하겠다. 특히 그는 대종교 경의원 참사로 활동하면서, 1942년 6월 10일에 대종교의 교가(敎歌)인 『한얼노래』를 펴냈다. 이들 노래에는 이극로의 투철한 신앙심과 나라사랑의 신념을 엿볼 수 있는 가사로서, 대종교의 신앙생활과 정신수양, 그리고 종교예식에 관한 내용이 담겨 있다.
첫째, 『한얼노래』에서 ‘신앙’과 관련된 곡조에서 이극로는 대종교의 신앙심과 삼신에 대한 믿음을 전달하고 있다. 여기서 그는 말하는 삼신일체를 부각시킨다. 그는 대종교가 지닌 불굴의 의지와 희생정신, 대종교에 대한 찬미와 더불어 믿음의 즐거움을 노래하고 있다. 그런 점에서 이극로가 작사한 ‘신앙’ 관련의 곡조는 자신의 신앙심을 고스란히 담아내고 있다고 하겠다.
둘째, 『한얼노래』에서 ‘수양’과 관련된 곡조에는 대종교에 걸맞은 이극로의 수양정신이 담겨 있다. 대종교인들은 나철의 수행생활을 본받아 일상생활에서도 수행을 병행해 왔다. 대종교에서는 일의화행(一意化行), 곧 ‘한뜻으로 화행하라’고 가르친다. 그런 점에서 이극로가 작사한 ‘수양’ 관련의 곡조는 신앙생활과 일상생활에 있어 신도들의 수양을 고양시켜 주고 있다.
셋째, 『한얼노래』에서 ‘예식’과 관련된 곡조에서는 대종교의 경건한 의례의식을 엿볼 수 있다. 대종교의 의식은 크게 선의식과 경배식으로 구분할 수 있는데, 이극로는 경배식에 해당되는 곡조를 작사했다. 따라서 이극로가 작사한 ‘예식’ 관련의 곡조는 대종교 신도들의 일상적인 종교의식을 담아내고 있다.
결국 이극로의 한글 연구와 조선어학회 활동, 그리고 그것을 통한 항일운동의 배경에는 대종교 신앙이라는 정신적 가치가 굳게 자리잡고 있었다. 무엇보다도 그 대종교 관련 행적은 일제강점기와 광복기에 걸친 근대 지식인의 전형으로 설정될 수 있다는 점에서 각별한 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 또한 그의 다면적 활동은 독립운동가이자 한글학자로서의 이력을 더욱 풍성하게 만들어준다고 하겠다.

영어초록

Lee Geuk-ro(1893-1978) was an independent activist and Hangul scholar who practiced love of country and love of Hangul. He devoted himself to keeping the nation through the time of the loss of the country and the liberation period, and led the study and dissemination of Hangul with his firm beliefs. He also showed activities that could not be overlooked in the field of literature and religion, especially in his life, Daejonggyo had a great influence. Among his various writings, there are many articles related to Daejonggyo.
This article aims to examine the meaning and characteristics of Haneollorae(한얼노래) which was published in June 1942. For this purpose, the writer examined the meaning and characteristics of Daejonggyo activities of Lee Geuk-ro and the subjects of Haneollorae. Especially, I examined the background and composition of creation of Haneollorae, and carefully examined the types and characteristics of it in terms of religious ceremony.
The spiritual value of Daejonggyo faith was firmly established in the background of the study of Hangul in the time of the loss of the country, the activities of the Hangul society, and the anti-Japanese movement through it. In other words, his love of the country, his attachment to Hangul and writing, and his aspirations for realizing the ideals of our nation are derived from his relationship with Daejonggyo. In particular, he was a member of the Daejonggyo Council, and on June 10, 1942, he published Daejonggyo's song. These songs are lyrics that can give a glimpse of the faith of the drama and the faith of the country, and they contain the religious life, spiritual training, and religious ceremonies of Daejonggyo.
First, in the tune related to ‘faith’ in Haneollorae, Lee Geuk-ro conveys the faith of Daejonggyo and the belief in Samsin, where he highlights all the three gods he speaks. He sings the joy of faith along with the indomitable will, sacrifice spirit, and praise for Daejonggyo. In this regard, the tune related to belief written by Lee Geuk-ro is said to contain his faith.
Second, the tunes related to ‘cultivation’ in Haneollorae contain the spirit of training the two poles suitable for the Daejonggyo, and Daejongists have been practicing in daily life, imitating the performance of Na cheol. In Daejonggyo, it teaches to make a speech with a single meaning, or to make a speech with a single meaning. In this regard, the tune related to discipline written by Lee Geuk-ro enhances the cultivation of believers in religious life and everyday life.
Third, in the tune related to ‘ceremonialism’ in Haneollorae, the godly ritual consciousness of Daejonggyo can be seen. The consciousness of Daejonggyo can be largely divided into good consciousness and worship ceremony. Therefore, the tune related to ceremonialism written by Lee Geuk-ro contains the daily religious consciousness of Daejonggyo believers.
In the end, the spiritual value of Daejonggyo faith was firmly established in the background of the Hangul research, the activities of the Hangul society, and the anti-Japanese movement through it. Above all, the Daejonggyo related activities can be given special meaning in that they can be set as the typical of modern intellectuals during the time of the loss of the country and the liberation period. In addition, his multi-faceted activities make his history as an independent activist and Hangul scholar richer.
