일제 말기 근대 초극의 열망과 미학의 양상－정비석의 일본어 소설과 조선어 소설을 중심으로－ (The Desire to Overcome Modernity and Spects of Aesthetics at the End of the Japanese Colonial Period －A Comparative Study of a Japanese Novel and a Korean Novel Written by Cheong Bi-seok－)

초록

이 논문은 정비석의 일제 말기 일본어 소설과 조선어 소설의 미학 원리의 공통성과 차이를 규명하고자 한다. 한국문학사에서 빈 공간으로 간주되는 일제 말기에, 정비석은 일본어 소설뿐만 아니라 조선어 소설을 꾸준히 발표한다. 정비석의 일제 말 소설은 일본의 동아협동체 정책을 수용하고 이를 소설적 미학으로 재현한다. 작가의 의식이 분열되지 않는 한, 일본어 소설과 조선어 소설 간에는 서로 연결되는 공통의 자장 속에 있을 것이다. 그러나 소설의 매체인 언어를 달리한다는 것은 소설이 지향하는 대상과 소통 맥락이나 예상 독자를 달리하므로 작품의 내용과 경향의 차이가 발생할 수 있다.
정비석은 일본어 소설 <산의 휴식(山の憩ひ)>, <마을은 봄과 더불어(村は春と共に)> 등에서는 동아협동체 논리를 재현하고 있는데, 새로운 정치경제적 세계를 열망하는 유토피아적인 소망과 서구 근대가 야기한 억압과 타락을 회복하려는 윤리적 감성과 미학이 중층적으로 얽혀 있다. 즉 동아협동체에 대한 소망은 역동성, 남성다움, 인고의 미덕, 복종, 속도 등의 소설 미학으로 드러나고 있다. 이는 자기를 뛰어넘어 국가의 역사적 사명에 복종하는 전체주의 미학의 근본 특징과 연결된다.
그런데 동시대에 발표된 <추야장>, <김첨지> 등과 같은 조선어 소설에서는 서구적 근대성에 대비된 동양적 전통에서 공동사회의 윤리와 소망스런 가치를 찾고자 한다. 전쟁기 시대에 필요한 윤리를 호명하라고 허용된 공간 속에서 집단적 단위인 한민족을 공통의 정서와 집합적 기억으로 재현한다. 이때 한민족은 땅과 피에 근거한 자연적 실체로서 수용되는 반면, 조국 일본과 동아협동체는 계약적이고 구성적 관계로 인지된다. 이런 점에서 정비석의 일제 말기 조선어 소설은 한민족의 기억과 정서를 발견하고 재구성하는 공간이 되며 조국 일본의 민족/국가 개념과 분열 지점을 내포한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to clarify the commonalities and differences of the aesthetic principles of Cheong Bi-seok’s Japanese novel and Korean novel at the end of the Japanese colonial period.
At the end of the Japanese colonial period, which is defined as empty space in Korean literary history, Cheong Bi-seok steadily published not only a Japanese novel but also a Korean novel. Cheong Bi-seok’s work at the end of the Japanese colonial period accepted the policy of an East Asia community and reproduced it in a romantic aesthetic. Unless the author’s sense is divided, it may be within a common magnetic field where is interconnected between a Japanese novel and a Korean novel. Using a different language to write a novel may involve subtle distinctions in the style of the novel itself, both because of nuances in the language and because of expectations of the audience.
While Cheong Bi-seok reproduced the idea of an East Asia community in the Japanese novel through themes such as “Rest of a Mountain,” and “a village is along with the spring,” it has also superimposed emotions and aesthetics that highlight the corruption of values of modern times, and the desire for a new political and economic world, based on the utopian ideal. In other words, a desire for an East Asia community has been appearing as an aesthetic of novel with such characteristics as dynamic, maleness, a virtue of endurance, obedience, and velocity. This is connected with the fundamental feature of a totalitarian aesthetic wherein one accepts the historical mission of their nation and obeys oneself.
However, he tried to portray a value of home in the Korean novels that were published in the same age, such as Chuyajang and Kim Cheomji, within a conflict structure that is an oriental tradition in contrast to Western modernity. Paradoxically, he portrayed Koreans as a natural collective unit using nature as a symbol of emotions and collective memory. In that moment, the Korean people were accepted as a natural phenomenon comprising the earth and blood. At the same time, they had a perception of “their homeland, Japan,” where there was a contractual and constructive relationship. In that sense, Cheong Bi-seok’s Korean novel written at the end of the Japanese colonial period is a space where one can find and reconstruct a memory of Korea and the emotions that have been severed from an East Asia community.
