초록

게일의 한국고전에 대한 비평 혹은 번역을 매개로 한 저술들 즉, 그의 한국고전학이 놓인 근대 학술사적 문맥은 서양인, 일본인 그리고 한국인이라는 세 연구주체들이 함께 펼친 역동적인 활동의 장으로 복수의 언어를 원천으로 한 ‘근대초기 한국학’이 형성되던 현장이었다. 본고는 이러한 근대 학술사적 문맥을 구성하기 위해 이중어사전에 수록된 어휘의 대역관계망을 살피며 한국고전, 외국어가 공존하며 상호관계를 맺던 당시 한국어의 문화생태를 살피고자 했다. 특히, 한국의 이중어사전에 수록/소거된 개별 한국어 표제항의 문맥과 용례를 복원하는 하나의 사례연구로써, 오늘날 ‘문화재 원형보존’에 있어 핵심적이며 쟁점적인 개념인 ‘원형’이라는 어휘[개념]의 형성 문맥과 그 용례를 고찰하고자 했다.
문화재란 어휘의 형성 이전 한국의 문화유산을 지칭하는 어휘를 찾기 위해, 개신교선교사의 한국고고학 논저 전반을 대상으로 서구어 어휘를 선정하여 이중어사전의 등재양상과 대역관계를 살폈다. 이를 통해 “古蹟=Ancient Remains”라는 대응관계의 등장이 원형 개념의 형성과정과 관련된 가장 중요한 좌표로 설정한 후, 이 등가관계 형성 이전/이후 개신교선교사의 고고학 논저를 통시적으로 고찰했다. 그 초기적 용례를 살펴보면, 헐버트가 영문으로 한국사를 서술한 고전학 성과를 기반으로 한국의 문화유산에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시했음을 발견할 수 있었다. 그는 근대 국민국가 단위의 우수한 민족문화를 구성하는 차원에서 한국의 문화유산을 조명했다. 그렇지만 헐버트의 이러한 용례는 서구어(영어)와 한국의 문화유산이라는 매우 제한된 관계망 속에서 등장한 것이다.
게일이 “古蹟=Ancient Remains”이라는 대응관계를 『韓英字典』(1911)에 등재시키지 않은 까닭은, 한국인의 한국어로 헐버트와 동일한 시도가 이루어지지 않았던 당시의 문화생태가 반영되어 있었기 때문이다. 1910년대 세키노 타다시(關野貞)를 위시한 조선총독부의 고적조사사업과 제국 일본의 근대 국민국가 차원에서의 한국문화유산에 관한 보존관리는 한국인에게도 문화재 원형보존 관념을 형성할 수 있는 계기를 제공했다. 왕립아시아학회 한국지부 학술지에 수록된 게일의 한국 고전학/고고학 논저(「파고다公園考(The Pagoda of Seoul)」(1915))는 이렇듯 새로운 1910년대 한국의 근대 학술사적 문맥에서 등장한 연구성과였다. 또한 원각사지 10층석탑의 역사적 원형을 복원한 이 논저 속에는 “古蹟=Ancient Remains”를 내면화한 조선광문회의 한국 근대 지식인의 개입이 존재했다.

영어초록

Gale's study on Korean classics, that is, Gale's review on Korean classics or his works based on Korean-English translation was located in Korea's modern academic context. Its context was a very dynamic field where the three subjects, that is, the Western, the Japanese, and the Korean participated in. It was also a place where the early modern Korean study based on multiple languages began to emerge. This paper investigates the entry word registered in the Bilingual Dictionary and its corresponding relation in order to illuminate the modern academic context and then the cultural environment where the Korean classics and foreign languages coexist and take mutual relationship. Especially, this paper is one of case studies to recover the context and the example of an individual Korean entry word which was registered in/removed from Korea's bilingual Dictionaries. Through this, it will investigate the emergence and the examples of the concept of 'prototype' which was core and controversial in the prototypical conservation of the cultural assets.
This paper covered most of the works on the Korean archeology by protestant missionaries to search for vocabulary to refer to Korean cultural heritage before the entry of cultural property. On this basis, I examined English words in relation to their entry and correspondence in the bilingual dictionaries. Through this I could find that the correspondence of 古蹟 and 'Ancient Remains' was very important in the formation of the concept 'prototype.' Therefore, I established the appearance of 'Ancient Remains' as an anchoring point and made a diachronic investigation of protestant missionaries' works of archaeology before/after this correspondence. The investigation of the early examples shows us that Hulbert played a significant role in the classics study and the archaeology in Korea by describing the Korean history in English. Hulbert considered Korean cultural heritage in an effort to form excellent national culture from the level of the modern nation-state. However, Herbert's example was made in the relation of Western language (English) and Korea cultural heritage. Unlike Hulbert, Gale didn't register vocabulary corresponding to 'Ancient Remains' in An Unabridged Korean- English Dictionary(Gale, 1911). Gale's case reflects the cultural environment at that time when the effort to find Korean cultural heritage from the perspective of Korean language was not yet made.
In short, the project for the investigation of historic remains by the Japanese Government-General of Korea including Sekino Tadashi(関野貞) and also the preservation and maintenance work of the Korea's historic remains by the colonial government at the level of modern nation-state contributed to the emerging concept of preserving the prototypical state of cultural assets. Gale's article of Korean classics/archaeology ("The Pagoda of Seoul", 1915) which was published in Transactions of Royal Asiatic Society-Korean Branch was a new and important work emerging in the modern academic context of the 1910s. And this article by Gale which restored the historical remain of Ten-story Stone Pagoda of Wongaksa Temple Site also shows that it was influenced by modern Korean intellectuals of Chosun Gwangmunhoe(朝鮮光文會) who internalized the concept of 古蹟='Ancient Remains'.
