한국어와 미얀마어 수의 상징적 의미 비교 연구 -숫자와 날짜를 중심으로- (A Comparative Study on the Symbolic Meanings of Numerals in Korean and Myanmar Languages -Focusing on Numbers and Dates-)

초록

본 연구는 미얀마인 한국어 학습자들이 한국어에서 사용되는 수의 문화적 배경을 이해하여 정확하게 사용할 수 있기 위해서 한국어와 미얀마어 수의 상징 의미를 비교하여 두 언어 간에 보이는 수의 문화적인 공통점과 차이점을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 1 단위에 속한 하나(1), 셋(3), 넷(4), 다섯(5), 일곱(7), 여덟(8), 아홉(9)을 수의 기본적인 단위로 보고 연구대상으로 선정하여 이들의 상징을 비교하였다. 다음으로 양국에서 명절을 치르는 날짜를 통해서도 수의 상징을 비교하여 문화 간 공통점과 차이점을 밝혔다. 비교한 결과 양국에서 하나(1)와 셋(3)은 의미가 유사함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 4는 양국에서 기피하는 숫자이지만 기피하는 방식이 다름을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 나머지 숫자들이 지니고 있는 의미는 두 언어 간에서 서로 다르다는 점을 파악된다. 전체적으로 숫자가 갖고 있는 상징 의미가 다른 이유는 각 나라의 문화적 배경과 사회적 배경의 차이 때문이라고 파악할 수 있을 것이다. 날짜를 통해 수의 상징적 의미를 비교할 때 한자어권 나라인 한국에서는 중양, 보름날, 그 외의 날짜로 명절날을 정하는데 반해 미얀마 명절의 경우 전부 불교문화를 토대로 한 명절임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 미얀마인 한국어 학습자들이 한국어 수의 상징적 의미를 통해 한국 문화를 이해하는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 연구로서의 출발점이 된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to clarify the cultural similarities and differences between Korean and Myanmar by comparing the symbolic meanings of numerals in those languages so that Myanmar Korean learners can understand the cultural background of numbers and accurately use in Korean. First, one(1), three(3), four(4), five(5), seven(7), eight(8) and nine(9) belonging to 'one' unit were selected as the objects of this study and compared their symbolic meanings. Next, the symbolic meanings of numerals by holiday dates in both countries were also compared to clarify the similarities and differences between the two cultures. As the results, 'one' and 'three' have similar meanings in both languages as well as 'four' is the number to avoid in both languages, but the way of avoiding was different. And the rest numbers have the different symbolic meanings in each languages. Overall, the reason why the symbolism of numbers can be understood due to the difference between cultural and social background of each country. When comparing the symbolic meanings of numbers through holiday dates, it was found that in it was found that in Korea with Hanja culture, the holidays were set on the basis of ‘Double Ninth Festival’, Full moon day and the others days whereas all of the Myanmar holidays were based on Buddhist culture. This study is meaningful that the commons and differences were pointed out by comparing the symbolic meanings of both languages focused on numbers and the dates in order to fully understand the symbolic meaning of Korean numbers and to avoid the misunderstandings by Korean learners in Myanmar. I hope that this study will be meaningful as a starting point of research that can help Myanmar Korean learners understand Korean culture through the symbolic meaning of Korean numbers.
