Pastoral Ministry of the Word in the Selected Teachings of Augustine, Chrysostom, and St Gregory the Great

This paper attempts to explore the ministry of the pastor by probing the works of three main church fathers: Augustine, Chrysostom, and St Gregory the Great. According to these representative leaders of the early church, teaching the Word in relation to forming the congregation is an essential role of the pastor in leading God’s people in the Christ. The teaching ministry of the Word has three main functions: feeding, treating, and protecting God’s people with the Word. They also stress that in order to faithfully lead God’s people with the Word, pastors need to shape characters of life with the help of God by developing virtues and characters. And the most important virtue in pastoral leadership of the ministry of the Word is the holiness or purity of the pastor as a mark of being filled with the Holy Spirit. In the challenging context of pastoral ministry for today, even though the specific conditions and types of ministry are different from those of the early church, the essence of pastoral ministry is still same: the ministry of the Word. All God’s people throughout history in every place need to be nurtured and cured with the Word and be protected from the attacks of different teaching of the gospel. Keeping this simple yet crucial theme of pastoral ministry, this paper argues that the most important role of pastoral leadership is to continue to develop the ministry of the Word by appropriately teaching it. This pastoral duty related to the Word can be accomplished not by developing practical skills but by shaping the characters of the leaders as Augustine, Chrysostom, and Gregory the Great commonly emphasize the significance of developing pastoral leadership for forming the congregation with the Word in their pivotal writings.
