『學語』의 편찬 의식과 구성에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Compilation Consciousness and Composition of 『Hak Eo(學語)』)

초록

본 논문에서는 19세기 재야학자 朴載哲에 의해 편찬된 인성교육 및 문장학습용 초학교재 『학어』의 편찬 의식과 구성적 특징 및 편찬 방식 등에 대해 고찰해 보았다.
『학어』는 1868년(고종 5)에 충북 음성에서 목판본으로 간행된 초학교재이다. 이 책의 편찬 목적은 효과적이고 합리적인 아동 교육을 위해 경전의 요체를 추출하여 학문에 입문함으로써 학습의 효율성을 제고하는 데 있었다. 박재철은 이 교육서를 통하여 성리학의 기본 원리를 익히고 인생을 살아가는 데 있어서 반드시 연마해야 할 도덕적 소양을 쌓게 하고자 하였으며, 이는 성리학적 가치에 의문이 제기되고 서학이 유입되는 등 가치관의 혼란이 일어나던 당시 사회 분위기 속에서 유학의 근본으로 회귀하고자 하는 보수적 교육관을 천명하는 것이었다.
『학어』는 勸學篇․天道章․人道章․率性章․修道章․原道章의 총 여섯 부문으로 구성되어 있는데, 유가의 기본 원리와 학문의 중요성 및 바람직한 인성과 인륜, 전반적인 인생의 교훈 등을 광범위하면서도 세부적으로 다루면서 성리설의 전체적인 개념과 구조를 효과적으로 파악하도록 하였다. 또한 이 책의 편찬 방식은 아동 학습에 도움이 될 만한 전인의 행동이나 명구를 經史子集의 문헌 중에서 가려 뽑되, 간결하고도 평이하게 기술하여 초학자가 용이하게 접근할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 선현의 언행을 주제별로 轉載하고 분류하는 데서 그치는 것이 아니라 저자의 견해를 적극적으로 표명함으로써 관련 주제를 일목요연하게 드러낼 수 있도록 하였다.
올바른 가치관의 정립과 인성 교육이 중시되는 현대 사회의 시대적 분위기 속에서 이 책이 지성과 인격을 두루 갖춘 전인적 인간의 양성에 교육적 목표를 두고 있다는 점에서 그 현재적 가치를 찾아볼 수 있을 것이다. 또한 타인과 더불어 살아가는 공동체적 삶에 대한 강조 및 자연 훼손이나 생명 경시에 대한 경계 등은 물질문명에 경도된 현대사회에 경각심을 주기에 충분하다. 이 밖에 사적 중심의 간단명료한 문장으로 기술되어 주제별로 분류된 다양한 시대의 다양한 인물의 고사는 그 내용의 체화를 통한 인성 수양의 효과뿐만 아니라 각종 고사 학습서로서도 기능할 수 있을 것이라는 측면에서 한문 기초 학습서로서의 활용 가능성 역시 찾아볼 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This paper considered the compilation consciousness, the constructive characteristics and the compilation method of 『Hak Eo(學語)』 which was an elementary teaching material for virtue education and sentence learning compiled by 19th century scholar Park Jae-cheol(朴載哲).
『Hak Eo(學語)』 was an elementary teaching material published in 1868(Gojong 5) in Eumseong, Chungbuk. The compilation purpose of this book, for effective and reasonable education of children, was to increase the efficiency of learning by extracting the important point of scriptures and entering the learning. Through this teaching material, Park Jae-cheol wanted to learn the basic principles of Neo-Confucianism and to build up the moral discipline that must be cultivated in life. It was to declare a conservative educational viewpoints that wanted to return to the basics of Confucianism in the social atmosphere of the time when there was confusion in values, such as the question of the Neo-Confucian values and the introduction of Western Learning.
『Hak Eo(學語)』 consists of six sections: ‘the encouragement of learning(勸學篇)’․‘a disposition of Providence(天道章)’․‘the human obligation(人道章)’․‘to follow one’s nature(率性章)’․‘to cultivate oneself spiritually(修道章)’․‘the source of morality(原道章)’. While extensively and concretely dealing with the basic principles of Confucian scholar, the importance of learning, the virtues and morality, and the lessons of life in general, it let students effectively identify the overall concept and structure of Neo-Confucianism. In addition, the compilation method of this book was that it selected the behaviors and memorable phrases of former people which were helpful for children’s learning from the Confucian scriptures, History, the books of all philosophers, and Anthology. But it was simple and plainly described so that beginners could easily access it. Also, he did not stop in reproducing and classifying the words and behaviors of ancient sages thematically, he could manifestly revealed the related subject by actively expressing the author’s opinion.
In the atmosphere of modern society where the establishment of the right values and the virtue education are emphasized, the present value can be found in that the book aims to educate a well-rounded human beings with both intelligence and personality. In addition, the emphasis on communal life living with others and the vigilance against destruction of nature or disregard of life are sufficient to alert the modern society, which come to concentrate on material civilization. Besides, in the aspect that the ancient occurrences of various figures from various ages described and thematically classified in the simple and clear sentence centered on the history can function not only as the effect of humanity training through the embodiment of the contents, but also as the various ancient occurrences learning book, we will find the possibility of using it as a basic learning book for Chinese classics.
