본 연구는 영화 <콘크리트 유토피아>를 르네 지라르의 욕망 이론과 희생양 메커니즘을 중심으로 분석하고, 황궁 아파트 주민회의 형성과 해체 과정을 조명한다. 이를통해 폭력이 단순한 생존 수단이 아니라, 인간 욕망과 공동체 내부의 긴장 속에서 필연적으로 발생하는 현상임을 밝힌다. 먼저, <콘크리트 유토피아>에서 ‘아파트’가 가지는 의미를 르네 지라르의 욕망 이론을 바탕으로 탐구한다. 영화 속에서 아파트는 단순한 주거 공간이 아니라 사회적 위계와 욕망이 투영된 장소로 기능하며, 황궁 아파트 주민들과 외부인(드림 팰리스 주민들) 간의 대립이 상호 모방적 욕망을 어떻게 심화시키고, 동시에 공동체의 결속을 강화하는지를 논의한다.
또한, 영화가 폭력의 순환 구조를 어떻게 서사적으로 드러내는지를 분석함으로써, 황궁 아파트 주민회 내부에서 발생하는 폭력과 이를 해결하려는 과정에서 작동하는 희생양 메커니즘을 고찰한다. 황궁 아파트 주민들의 폭력은 외부인과의 대립뿐만 아니라 공동체 내부에서도 작동한다. 주민들은 공동체의 결속을 유지하기 위해 차이를 만들어내고, 차이가 소멸될 때 새로운 차이를 형성하며 갈등을 지속한다. 이러한 과정에서 희생양 메커니즘이 동원되어 위기를 봉합하지만, 이는 결국 새로운 폭력을 낳는 악순환을 초래한다. 주민 수칙과 같은 제도적 장치는 이러한 폭력을 정당화하는 역할을 하며, 희생 제의는 성스러운 행위로 포장된다. 그러나 폭력의 본질은 변하지 않으며, 공동체 내부에서는 지속적인 균열이 발생한다.
<콘크리트 유토피아>는 단순한 생존 서사가 아니라, 한국 사회의 욕망과 폭력의 작동 방식을 은유적으로 조망하는 작품이다. 황궁 아파트와 드림 팰리스의 대비는 경쟁과 모방 욕망의 결과물이며, 이들이 만들어내는 폭력의 메커니즘은 우리 사회에서도 반복적으로 나타나는 현상임을 보여준다. 본 연구는 르네 지라르의 이론을 통해 이를 분석함으로써, 영화 속 폭력이 단순한 극적 장치가 아니라 사회 구조와 긴밀히 연결된 문제임을 확인하였다.

This study analyzes the film Concrete Utopia through the lens of René Girard’s theory of mimetic desire and the scapegoat mechanism, focusing on the formation and dissolution of the Hwanggung Apartment Residents’ Association. Through this analysis, the study reveals that violence is not merely a means of survival but an inevitable consequence of human desire and internal tensions within a community.
First, this study explores the significance of “apartment” in Concrete Utopiabased on Girard’s theory of desire. In the film, the apartment functions not just as a residential space but as a symbolic representation of social hierarchy and desire. The conflict between the residents of Hwanggung Apartment and the external survivors (former residents of Dream Palace) is analyzed to demonstrate how mimetic desire intensifies conflicts while simultaneously reinforcing communal solidarity.
Furthermore, this study examines how the film narratively portrays the cyclical nature of violence, focusing on the internal conflicts within the Hwanggung Apartment Residents’ Association and the operation of the scapegoat mechanism as a means of resolution. The violence exhibited by the residents is not only directed toward external survivors but also manifests within the community itself.
To maintain unity, the residents continuously construct and redefine differences, and when those differences fade, new distinctions emerge to sustain conflict. In this process, the scapegoat mechanism is employed as a temporary resolution to crises, but ultimately, it perpetuates further violence. Institutional measures such as community regulations serve to justify this violence, while sacrificial acts are framed as sacred rituals. However, the fundamental nature of violence remains unchanged, leading to ongoing fractures within the community.
Concrete Utopia is not merely a survival narrative; it serves as an allegory for the mechanisms of desire and violence in contemporary Korean society. The contrast between Hwanggung Apartment and Dream Palace exemplifies the consequences of mimetic rivalry and competition, revealing a pattern of violence that is recurrent in our society. By applying Girard’s theory, this study demonstrates that the violence in the film is not just a dramatic device but a phenomenon deeply intertwined with structural issues in society.
