국내 지역학 교육 발전 방향의 모색 - 환태평양지역 우수 지역학 학위과정 사례조사를 중심으로 (Searching for the direction of the development of area studies education in Korea: Focusing on the case studies of excellent area studies degree programs abroad)

초록

본 논문은 해외의 우수 지역학 학위과정 사례조사를 통해 국내 지역학 교육의 발전 방향을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 현재 국내의 지역학 동향이나 향후 과제와 관련된 기존문헌은 주로 지역‘연구’라는 측면에 주로 집중해 왔다. 물론, 지역학 발전의 근간에 연구의 활성화가 필수적임은 자명한 사실이다. 그러나 지역학에 대한 사회적 수요를 검토하고, 커리큘럼을 개발하며, 학생들을 교육하여 지역학 관련 사회적 수요에 적절한 인력을 배출함과 동시에 학문후속세대를 양성하는 것과 같은 지역학 관련 ‘교육’의 중요성은 연구만큼이나 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 지역학 관련 학문적·교육과정 수월성을 기반으로 환태평양지역의 하와이대학교(University of Hawaii at Manoa), UC 산타바바라(UC Santa Barbara) 및 와세다대학교(Waseda University)의 지역학 학위과정 프로그램을 벤치마킹하여 국내 지역학 교육에의 함의와 시사점을 제시하였다. 자세한 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 우리나라의 지역학 학위과정은 특정 대학을 제외하면 제2외국어 관련 수업이 상대적으로 부족하며, 이를 극복하기 위한 제2외국어 커리큘럼의 확충이 요구된다. 지역학을 전공함에 있어 제2외국어 구사력은 필수적이기 때문이다. 둘째, 지역학 학위과정 내 주 전문분야와 부 전문분야를 구체적으로 지정하여 일정 학점 이상 수강토록 함으로써 학생들의 개별 관심 연구주제에 대한 학술적 전문성을 제고하는 것이 필요하다. 셋째, 학생들의 성공적 사회 진출을 위해 보다 양질의 인턴십 제도를 더욱 확충하고, 다양한 희망 진로 수요에 부합할 수 있는 교육과정 개편이 필요하다. 넷째, 단순히 특정 지역에 대한 내용만을 교육하기보다 해당 지역을 총체적으로 이해하기 위해 국가 간, 지역 간 관계 등을 포괄하는 동태적 접근법에 기반한 지역학 교육이 요구된다. 다섯째, 비록 국내 지역학 대학원 과정에 연구조교 제도를 두고 학생들의 연구 참여를 독려하고 있으나, 실질적으로 많은 대학원생들의 공동연구 참여가 활발하지 않다는 측면에서 향후 학생들의 연구역량 강화를 위한 실질적인 개선방안이 마련되어야 할 것이다. 마지막으로, 국내의 지역학 프로그램에서는 보다 체계적이고 다양한 지역학 연구방법 수업을 개설하여 지역학 연구 및 교육의 수월성 달성을 도모해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to seek the development of area studies education in South Korea through the case studies of excellent area studies degree program abroad. Currently, existing literature related to trends and future tasks of area studies in Korea has mainly focused on the aspect of area 'research'. Of course, it is an evident fact that the revitalization of research is essential at the basis of the development of area studies. However, the importance of 'education' related to area studies is as important as research, such as reviewing social demands for area studies, developing curricula, and educating students to produce the human resources for area studies-related social needs while at the same time training the future academic generation. Therefore, this study benchmarked the University of Hawaii at Manoa, UC Santa Barbara, and Waseda University's area studies degree programs based on area studies-related academic and curriculum excellence, suggesting implications for area studies education in Korea. Details are as follows. First, the degree programs of area studies in Korea have been relatively insufficient in second language-related courses except for some universities, and it is required to expand the second language curriculum because second language proficiency is essential in studying area studies. Second, it is necessary to enhance academic expertise in research topics of individual interest of students by specifically designating major and minor specialties within the area studies program and allowing them to take more than a certain credit. Third, for students to successfully enter society, it is necessary to further expand a higher-quality internship program and reorganize the curriculum to meet various desired career demands. Fourth, rather than simply educating the contents of a specific region, area studies education based on a dynamic approach that encompasses relations between countries and regions is required to comprehensively understand certain region. Fifth, although students are encouraged to participate in research with a research assistant system in the graduate school, practical improvement measures should be prepared to strengthen students' research capabilities in the future in that many graduate students are not actively participating in joint research. Finally, domestic area studies programs should open more systematic and diverse area studies research method classes to achieve excellence in area studies research.
