The Flower of Kusumo: Indonesian Fairy Tales Collection (1942) contains 20 works written by Japanese author Koide Shyogo in a fairy tale style sentence. Based on culture and emotion, works are largely classified into two types.
The first type is a story about gods, fairies, rice, and the sea that Indonesians worship or know well. In the 13 works, there are many depictions of God, and the idea of God is strong. The second type is a story that shows tricksters' performance and notions of good or bad. In the seven works, the aesthetics of satire, a sense of criticism of reality, and a people-oriented personality are well revealed.
The Flower of Kusumo is a collection of old stories of colonial states published under the political intention of the Japanese military during the Pacific War. However, other than the 'preface', there were no cases in which political voices were made through the text of the work or the voice of the narrator. In the subject or character of the work, it is not particularly noticeable to be interpreted politically, but rather, the pure literary character stands out. In this regard, it is necessary to take a closer look at The Flower of Kusumo as an Indonesian fairy tales collection in the early modern period and the publication of an Asian fairy tales collection.
