초록

This essay examines the ways in which the geography of loss results from the exercise of state power by the Koumintang government (KMT) in Edward Yang’s A Brighter Summer Day. Based on his memory of the actual murder incident that a young school boy killed his lover, this film considers its incident to be an expression of their anxiety against its oppressive state power. This essay utilizes Edward Relph’s concept of placelessness that, associated with humanistic geography, is founded on Martin Heidegger’s notion of “Being-in-the-World,” to analyze how KMT dispossesses Mainland Chinese immigrants of their “sense of space.” The government distributes its state power among different bureaucratic spaces such as Taiwan Garrison Command, school, and prison. Here I suggest that Mainland Chinese immigrants encounter the spatiality of surveillance and control, which is secretly achieved through the imposition of martial law. By using the ideology of anti-Communism as a strategy of controlling them, the government casts the shadow of its coercive power over the spaces such as Xiao Si’r’s house, a club house, and the streets. Throughout the essay, I argue that state power brings them a sense of placelessness through its spatial practices of violence in their daily lives.
