초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 20세기의 현대화와 빠른 도시 성장 과정은 다양한 결과로 현재에 남아있다. 변화하는 사회환경에서 도시경관의 질서를 유지하고 사람들의 상호작용을 유도하는 건축형식은 무엇인가에 대한 해법으로 일본은 과거로 시선을 돌리고 있다. 그중 한 방법론으로 도시와 주거를 연결하는 유기적 도시구조에 주목하여 전통 도시주거 ‘마치야’가 재논의 되었다. 이 연구는 마치야의 유형적 특성에 기초, 아틀리에 바우와우의 도시 리서치 및 디자인 프로젝트를 중심으로 마치야의 계보를 고찰함으로써 마치야 유형학이 오늘날 제공하는 사회문화적 의미를 조명하는 것을 목표로 한다. (연구방법) 첫째, 이론적 배경으로 건축적 유형과 유형학, 그리고 건축유형의 변화 과정을 이해하는 수단으로서 계보학의 개념을 검토한다. 둘째, 전통 마치야 원형의 건물 배치/ 평면 레이아웃/ 지붕의 형식/ 파사드 등 형식적 요소, 그리고 도시와의 관계에서 비롯된 일과 삶의 터전으로서 마치야의 주거문화를 살펴본다. 셋째, 마치야 원래의 공식으로부터 사회적 환경 영향에 따른 마치야의 변화를 조사한 아틀리에 바우와우의 도시 리서치인 “가나자와 마치야 세대 유형학”을 고찰한다. 넷째, 마치야의 삶의 방식을 오늘날의 콘텍스트에 재배치하는 아틀리에 바우와우의 디자인 프로젝트를 분석한다. (결과) 계보학적 측면에서 마치야의 유형적 특성과 오늘날의 디자인을 논한바, 마치야 유형학이 오늘날에 제공하는 사회문화적 가치는 다음과 같이 요약된다. 첫째, 마치야는 사용자와 거주 방식의 관계를 정의하는 건축 체계이다. 마치야는 관습적·문화적 행태를 재배열함으로써 일과 생활을 통합하여 오늘날의 새로운 라이프스타일을 제안하는 주거유형이다. 둘째, 마치야는 전통적으로 집주인의 소유권을 유지하되 한 개인이나 가족만의 배타적인 사적영역이 아닌 사회적 자원으로 고려된 건축양식이다. 마치야는 현대의 단절된 지역 사회 관계를 회복하여 서로 교류하게 하는 주거유형이다. 셋째, 마치야는 하나의 건물 유닛일 뿐 아니라 건물들을 연결하는 유기적 체계이다. 마치야는 건물 각각의 독자성을 유지하면서도 지역과 결속한 고유 경관을 형성하여 도시적 질서를 도모하는 주거유형이다. (결론) 본 연구는 마치야의 유형학적 계보를 바탕으로 오랜 삶의 방식과 도시 구조의 특수성을 계승하는 도시 주거 이론과 실제를 다룬 것에 의의를 두고자 한다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) The modernization and rapid urban growth process of the 20th century remains in the present with various results. Japan is looking to the past to search for solutions to the question of what architectural form can maintain orderly cityscape and encourage human interaction in a changing social environment. As one of these methods, ‘machiya’, the traditional urban housing, has been discussed with an eye on the organic urban structure that connects the city and housings. This study aims to illustrate the sociocultural meaning that machiya typology provides today by examining the genealogy of machiya based on the urban research and design projects of Atelier Bow-Wow. (Research Method) Firstly, as a theoretical background, it addresses the concept of architectural type and typology, and genealogy as a means of understanding the process of changes in the architectural type. Secondly, it clarifies formal elements such as building arrangement/ planing layout/ roof type/ facade, and the residential culture of machiya as a place for work and daily life that stems from its relationship with the city. Thirdly, it examines “Generational Typology”, the urban research specifically in Kanazawa Atelier Bow-Wow surveyed the modifications of machiya from its original formula in response to social and environmental changes. Fourthly, it analyzes the design projects of Atelier Bow-Wow that reposition the lifestyle of machiya into the contemporary context. (Results) Based on the typical characteristics of machiya and contemporary designs discussed from a perspective of genealogy, the sociocultural values that machiya typology provides today are summarized as follows. Firstly, machiya is an architectural system that defines the relation between the user and the way of living. Machiya is a housing type that proposes a new lifestyle for today with integrating work and life by rearranging customary and cultural behaviors. Secondly, machiya is an architectural style that traditionally retains the ownership, but is considered a social resource rather than the exclusive private domain of an individual or family. Machiya is a housing type that restores community relations and make people interact with one another. Thirdly, machiya is an organic system connecting buildings as well as a single building unit. Machiya is a housing type that creates a unique landscape integrating with the region and promotes urban order. (Conclusions) This study is meaningful in presenting a urban housing theory and practice that inherits the long-standing way of life and the distinctive urban structures of the region based on the typological genealogy of machiya.
