디자인 연구방법론을 적용한 비주얼 스토리텔링 연구 -그림책 “요요요 따라쟁이야!”를 중심으로- (A Study on Visual Storytelling Based on Design Research Methodologies -Focused on the Picturebook “The Fox and the Copycat”-)

초록

본 연구는 일러스트레이션을 통한 그림책 비주얼 스토리텔링에 효과적인 디자인 연구방법론을 고찰하고, 이론을 실제로 적용한 과정을 분석한 사례연구이다. 스토리텔링은 문화산업 전반뿐만 아니라 경영, 마케팅, 교육 등 우리 삶의 전반에 폭넓게 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 연구에서는 스토리텔링을 화자가 이야기에 메시지를 담아 특정 매체를 통해 수용자들에게 의도적으로 전달하는 커뮤니케이션의 한 과정으로 보고, 특히 수용자에게 이야기를 전달하는 시각화 부분에 초점을 맞춘다. 이 커뮤니케이션의 과정에서 활용되거나, 시각예술가가 구체적인 일러스트레이션 개발을 통해 이야기의 시각화를 할 때 유용한 디자인방법론들에 대해 논의한다.
먼저 일기 연구(Diary Studies), 스토리보드(Storyboards), 스토리텔링 유도하기(Directed Storytelling), 결정적 사건 기법(Critical Incident Technique), 창의적 도구 키트(Creative Toolkits)라는 5 가지 디자인 방법론의 개념과 방법을 고찰하고 이 연구방법론들이 일러스트레이션을 통한 그림책의 시각적 스토리텔링에 있어서 어떤 점이 적합하며, 효과적으로 활용하려면 어떻게 활용하는 것이 좋은지 서술한다. 이어서 4-6세 어린이를 대상으로 한 그림책『요요요 따라쟁이야!』의 디자인 과제와 이론적 토대가 되는 5 가지 디자인방법론의 구체적인 적용사례를 시각자료를 제시하며 논증한다.
이 연구는 문학적 맥락에서 논의되어오던 스토리텔링에 대해서 이야기의 시각화를 통해 수용자에게 메시지를 전달하는 과정에 초점을 맞추었다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 또한 이론의 적용 결과를 구체적 사례를 통해 분석적으로 조명함으로써 모호하고 통합적으로 여겨질 수 있는 창작의 현장에 적용될 수 있는 활용성을 높이고자 했다.

영어초록

This is a case study that examines the effective design research methodology for visual storytelling of picturebooks through illustration and analyzes the practical application process of the theory. Storytelling is widely affecting not only the cultural industry across the board, but also our whole lives including management, marketing and education. In this study, it was regarded that storytelling is a process of communication in which the speaker intentionally delivers a message to the recipient through certain media, and particularly focused on the visualization part of delivering the story to the recipient. It examines useful design methodologies when it is used in the process of this communication or when a visual artist wants to deliver one's story by developing a specific illustration.
First of all, it discusses the concepts and methods of the five design methodologies of Diary Studies, Storyboards, Directed Storytelling, Critical Incident Technique, Creative Toolkits, and, in visual storytelling of picture books through this illustration, it explains why these research methodologies are appropriate and how they can used effectively. And then, it proves by providing visual materials of design challenges of the picture book The Fox and the Copycat for 4-6 year-old children and specific application cases of the five design methodologies.
In this study, it considers that storytelling, which had been discussed in the context of literary or story creating, is a process of communication, so it is significant that it focuses on the process of delivering the message to the inmates by visualizing story. It also intended to increase the usability that can be applied in the field of creation that could be considered ambiguous and integrated by analytically examining the application results of the theory through the specific cases.
